Just vaguely curious as to the proportion of skiers vs snowboarders among you guys and girls. Just dreaming of whiter pastures... cheers, Chris Maunder

I've been skiing since I was 10 (14 years). I was out in Montanta in January, and I decided to try snowboarding. I rented a board and took a group lesson that turned out to be private, as I was the only one to sign up. I did all right at first, but I kept on catching my heel edge and slamming myself into the ground. I swear, it's like someone grabbing you by the ankles and pounding you into the ground. Had it not been for my helmet, I would have had a serious concussion. After several hours of this beating, I went back inside with a sore tailbone and a nice case of whiplash. I went back to my skis the next day. I guess I'm too much of a wuss for snowboarding. :-) Nick

I do both! I *have* had similar experience with being pounded into the ground (as Nick explained), but after the first time it gets much easier! Weather is never prime here anymore, so I guess I don't do much of either now, actually. :( Peace.

Real skiers do Cross Country skiing. You can't find a better workout! But sadly, the tracks in US are not very well prepared. I have also done some Alpine Skiing, but it is just too boring standing in line for the lift, freezing cold when you are in the lift and too crowded to be able to enjoy the ride. Haven't tried Snowboarding, but I have the same concerns.

I've always been a skier, --in fact, just went 2 weeks ago. I'm out here in Colorado so it's a sin if I don't make it at least once a year. :-D Been dying to try snowboarding tho. Seems to be more fun than skiing. Snowboarding is also more appealing to me since: 1. The boots look way more comfortable. 2. No poles. 3. More maneuverability, --easier 180°'s and so forth. 4. Less junk to carry around. Anyone who's done both agree? Matt

I tried snowboarding only few minutes. There was a pond at the end of slope... But this year I bought a new cavring ski (Atomic 9.18) and found skiing much more fun then before.

Went snowboarding week before last for last for the very time. Absolutely amazing! I would agree that you spend the first couple of days flat on your back... but it doesn't hurt much - unless you fall on ice :) I'm sure also the workout you gain far outweighs any slight bruising to the rear! ;) I would recommend it to anybody - I'm completely hooked! -- The Obliterator

Snowboarding is definately the the way to go! I used to ski, but haven't done so in about 6 years, and I don't think I'll be going back to them. I don't miss the clumsy ski boots or my ski poles, and I've never had to chase my snowboard down the mountain after I crashed. You guys who have been tempted to try snowboarding should hurry up and give it a try already... the season isn't going to last much longer(in most parts of US anyways). If you tried it once and hated it, don't give up. I really, really hated it my first two times. In fact, I swore I'd never do it again, but I ended up doing it anyway. Tips for the newbies: 1) Get lessons. 2) Go on a day that has good weather. Nothing sucks more than crashing all day long because you don't know what you're doing AND you can't see where you're going. That little nugget is from experience :) 3) Wear weather/water proof snowboard pants...you'll fall on your knees and rump alot. 3) Don't give up, you'll get the hang of it before you know it. It was actaully easier for me to learn how to snowboard than it was to learn how to ski. 4) Avoid icy snow...call it a day when the mountain starts to get icy. Snowboards don't handle well on icy snow and you will be a much happier camper if you stay away from it. 5) Step-in bindings are easier to use than the strap-in bindings, go for the step-in bindings. 6) Snowboarding is an "Xtreme" sport. Practice looking cool by catching cans of Mountain Dew while in midair and wearing "Xtreme" eyeglasses. Knowing how to properly "Snap into a SlimJim" provides an additional boost to your "Xtreme"-ness.

I dunno. I keep thinking that I should have a skateboard when I'm travelling. Easy to carry, faster than walking, and great for practicing the balance. Maybe I'm just getting to old for those kinds of shenanigans :) cheers, Chris Maunder

Skate is a kid's toy:cool: ) but just in case i get out of gas ,at night, in the middle of a National road.
