There are two types, one for low power coxial and one for high power wave tubes, in conjunction with TWTA's[^]. The switch ring is essentially a redundancy ring to extend the lifetime of the satellite by providing extra amplifiers and the ability to switch the low and high power portions of the signal to spare components. I've been trying to find a good pic, but this[^] is the best I've found. See the circle things with 1/4 circles inside them? That's a switch. The 1/4 circle shows the pathway of the signal. Now imagine 50 or more of these, with inputs and outputs lined up vertically as well, and with 2 1/4 circles in each switch, so you can do all sorts of fancy networking. Also, these rings are often stacked two or three or more layers deep, each layer with a different number of switches, to achieve further redundancy. Marc

In the days before programming, I used to do precision optics including things like night flying lenses for military aircraft and lenses for guided missiles. Be afraid. Be very afraid. :-D

So if we're all very lucky, they won't try to actually use this stuff. I'd hate to see a guided missle do a U turn in midair and head straight for my house because of something that QA missed. :-D

Sorry for late response. Actually I was asleep when you answered. It was late in the evening here, but I staid awake for a few more minutes. I think I understand it. The behavior is really like a transistor. Maybe they use software to gain more flexibility and easier further changes in the network. Thanks for detailed description and pictures. p.s. That's great they'll use your algorithm as a basement. I hope it works well. It seems to be an important part of TWAT which is an important part of the whole satellite :omg:
