I hate Vista

So - SQL Server 2005 installs on Vista, only there's no client tools. I've googled and lots of people have this issue. They all found different solutions, none of which work for me. I am going away tomorrow morning, I need to be able to work on my notebook. Thank you, Microsoft.
If you having so many issues why not try installing XP into a virtual machine. I've done this and use it quite often to run apps that don't run well or at all on Vista.

Did you install the developer edition? Tools installed fine with mine (64). I had to do quite a bit of work to get SSRS installed correctly on Vista. Mostly had to do with making sure IIS was installed as necessary. A pain but it works well now. I don't have the link to get SSRS going here.. I'll post it in the morning.

Yes, I did install the dev edition. Vista always breaks for me, I don't know why. I have dual boot I am now setting up all my tools on XP

I have a dual boot machine, but the issue is, I had everything else installed on Vista. I am setting it up on XP now

BTW, did you install SQL Server Service Pack 2? If you didn't, then try installing it, it worked for me on Vista Business. And yes, there is one more thing with IIS7 components - try installing the IIS 6 related tools (Metabase, Backward Compatibility, etc.) from the appwiz.cpl and REINSTALL SQL Server - it MIGHT start working (It did for me, though). P.S.: FYI, Reporting Services still doesn't work for me, even after going through all this :|

Perhaps - but if I can't install them successfully, who says the other stuff will work ?
I've installed the management studio on Vista without any problems. Interestingly enough, this laptop came with SQL 2005 Express already installed--there turns out to be a database used by Sony (it's a VAIO laptop), so I've never actually needed to install SQL 2005, only the Management Studio. Marc
im running vista and i have all these tools and then some. on my Sony VAIO laptop. maybe sony just does it right ;P

Always used SQL Server 2005 Express SP2 and Management Studio Express with no problems whatsoever. Maybe it's Vista that hates you. :-D The funny thing is that the experience with Vista varies so much from user to user.

Here we go again, blame the bogey man! Is there a new bullshit Apple ad out again? ;) I've had no issues with any of it, I've been developing on Vista exclusively for over a year now and use SQL server and tools quite heavily during development. I've also had no issues with *any* developer tools from any vendor, 3rd party component suites, Firebird database server, EMS SQL Manager for Firebird, graphics editors etc etc you name it they've all worked perfectly. The biggest area I remember having any difficulty with was initially developing against the IIS that comes with Vista but it all boiled down to the new interface and some minor tweaking that I found a guide for online, took about 30 minutes to set that up. Since setting it up correctly it's been fine ever since. I've found Vista to be more stable and faster than XP for development on the same hardware and I know I'm not alone, it's suckiness is highly exaggerated.

I'm really starting to believe there are only two reasons: 1) Inadequate hardware. 2) Unwillingness on the part of the user to believe that Vista is actually different in significant ways so they assume everything is the same as it ever was and run into trouble through their own lack of knowledge.

What worked for me was installing SQL 2005 SP2. I'm sure you've tried, but I figured it was worth mentioning..
"impossible" is just an opinion.

Hey - don't go speaking logic. People just like to rant about Vista, they don't need any sensible explanations :D Btw - running Vista (x64) for over a year with very few problems - fewer then I had on XP. And yes, I have SQL Server 2005 dev edition installed with management studio.

Well, the SQL Server 2005 installer plain does not work. Are you suggesting there are magic words I need to say to make installers work on Vista ? Dual core machine, 2 gig of RAM, 200 gig of free space on the HDD I am installing to, is that not enoug for Vista to run SS2005 ?

Yeah, I saw one last night.

Seriously - the installer doesn't work. The error log has no useful information. What do you expect me to say here ? This is not like UAC ( which I still think totally sucks and is an assault on the user, but I am done complaining about it ). The installer does not work. The end.
John C wrote:

Oh, I'm sure they work sometimes. Every hit I got googling the problem had a different solution, I almost think the installer works at random and people are blaming the last thing they tried. I installed it three times, from three different DVDs and found no useful help, nor would the client tools install.

Didn't you know that? They're in the documentation. Just kidding... As far as I know, you should download the packages that already include SP2. They're a bit tricky to find, but they are available. I'm quite sure that the packages with no SP2 don't work with Vista.

Faster - it depends: x86 seems slower than XP, but x64 is faster than XP on the same hardware. More stable - that's true.

Yeah, I am under the impression it fails at random, as in, it depends on the setup of the machine. Can't find what fixes it tho.

OK - I guess that is it. I can't download, my MSDN has been cut off b/c I'm not an MVP anymore.
