I was laid off last week from a great job and I'm taking a contract to fill in until I can find permanent work. In the meantime, I need to find affordable health insurance. COBRA is $1000/month to get a $2500/person deductible and 0% coinsurance. I'd love to find something for less per month for $5000/person deductible for 0% coninsurance. Does anyone have suggestions of companies they use, or cautionary tales of companies not to use? I'm located in Texas, so I know mileage may vary.

Try http://www.ehealthinsurance.com/[^]. Wide variety of pricing and options, and certainly not $1000 per month for this kind of requirement.

I use this company[^] Currently (just raised) rates to $377 / mo for myself and my son. My experiences have been incredibly positive. I never have to call them, and when Ian had his finger half cut off by a saw at school, they were incredibly prompt at notifying me exactly what they were covering, at getting the payments to the hospital, and so forth (the school picks up the rest.) Very efficient, which is unheard of in the health care industry. My girlfriend has to spend hours on the phone for every little thing because her insurance (through her work) can never get the billing right. That's a lot of time wasted at billable hours for me! You should be able to get something like that for around 150 a month. Anthem has a few high deductible plans I think. Good luck...

Ethically they should cover the amount of airtime wasted on them as well.

COBRA is supposed to be the employers plan they had you on. It is hard to believe that it is 1000 a month. Sounds screwy, my personal health insurance is 160 a month with a 5k deductible and it covers everything after the 5k. I have it primarily in case of the big C or a broken bone or something. From what I have heard, (Small business owners listen up) ADP offers great health insurance at extremely cheap rates and may even offer service to the 1 man shop. I haven't researched it yet but many small businesses owners I know have switched there employees over just to remain competitive in the benefits department.

We used Assurant for my daughter when she graduated from college. http://www.assuranthealth.com/[^] The plan choosen was for major medical only and no basic doctor visits, etc. but was very affordable.
