Can ubuntu be installed as a dual boot with XP?, I have ubuntu desktop and I need to try it, can I run it regularly ?:confused:
How about having a Virtual PC rather? It is still safe right?

If you have the installation disk of Hardy then you can try it without installing it. When you boot from the CD you can get the option in the screen "Try without install". I just installed it. I tell you, its awesome. Better than previous versions. Some nasty bugs removed and its have the Firefox 3 beta also. Go for it man.

I did this with the previous version (7.10). The trick for me was to create 2 partitions from the XP disk management program that Linux will use on install. One will be the main partition (mine was 20 GB), and another was the swap partition (2 GB). Then I installed Ubuntu from the Live CD with no problems. The fist time I tried it, I didn't specify a swap partition and the installer was crashing at ~95%.

Yes, it will work fine. I can't recommend the KDE4 beta version though, it's still slow, buggy and pretty unusable as of about 3 weeks ago when I installed it.

Isn't needed anymore, it has wubi build-in. Which will install Ubuntu in a file that stays in your Windows partition. No extra partition but you do get an extra entry in your boot menu :)

you can install it within windows as an application as well.

Isn't needed anymore, it has wubi build-in. Which will install Ubuntu in a file that stays in your Windows partition. No extra partition but you do get an extra entry in your boot menu :)
I used wubi in the past with Ubuntu 7.04 and loved it. But when I wanted to upgrade to 7.10, the updated wubi was still in beta and I didn't want to take any chances with it.

Yes, install XP first then you can resize the XP partition to make room for Ubuntu and the installer set up a boot menu.

If you want to run it in a VM get VMWare, it's built to handle the graphics sub systems for unix based OS's, VPC doesn't deal well with this at all. Plus you can install vmware tools (once the client OS is installed) that will support better graphics acceleration for the OS's desktop.

With most OS's it is. With the latest version of Ubuntu I do not believe you have to do this any more. They have an installer that you can run from within windows that will walk you through this. It's pretty cool actually. If you do create a partition, figure on 10-20 Gb in size, depending on what you're going to do.

A much less invasive method of dual booting Windows and Ubuntu is using Wubi[^]. It creates a virtual partition within free space on your Windows partition and installs Ubuntu in it. No partition resizing necessary.
