Alternative To iTunes?

Anyone know of a decent free alternative to iTunes? I've tried Songbird 0.5 and IMHO, it's pretty buggy and doesn't provide some really crucial functionality.

Can't recommend any though as I haven't tried any of them, it's irritating and quite a shame really how much of a resource hog it is under windows, but for one reason or another the Mac version is a pleasure to use so I haven't had to worry about this.

What portion(s) of iTunes are you trying to replicate? The online media store? Media organization on the PC? Ripping? Syncing to an iPod? Playing media on the PC?

good question, because if it's just the iPod management i would use SharePod. very highly rated. the store? maybe microsoft as a nice DRM music download site somewhere.

I don't want to sync. I don't generally buy music online. I don't like Apple's update practices.

I find it to be lean and effective. /ravi

For your purposes, I would say WinAmp as well. I used to use it before I got addicted to buying songs on iTunes. I've always had an iPod, and don't really have a problem with iTunes.

I use sharepod running directly off my iPod and it works great, highly recommend it to anyone! :-D

It's going to be ported to Windows (almost there I believe). I think it's an excellent player, and I'm usually pretty conservative about these things.

It does seem to have some problems though, even after wiping the iPod after ensuring automatic starts of iTunes was disabled, it manages to loose files. I don't know whether it is overwritting existing filenames with new content or what, but sometimes the tune playing is not the one that the iPod track info shows, and the only way to fix it is to use iTunes.
