This sign[^], submitted to TheDailyWTF[^], was spotted by Adrian V. at a train station or on a train in South Africa.  I like it that it's quite clear what you're not allowed, but being that specific about illegal weapons opens up a whole new avenue for unspecified items.

There's something like a spear in there - surely they don't use spears in SA to attack people? :~

    Cheers, Vikram.

Not generally, but it is a Zulu traditional weapon, and they are carried a lot in marches etc. and occasionally used.

Well, swords are commonly brandished by political leaders during rallies, but that's more of a North Indian cultural thing. When you say 'occasionally used', you don't mean 'used as a weapon', do you? :~ 'Cause I imagine it would be a heck of a lot inconvenient to assault somebody with a spear....

        Cheers, Vikram.

Doesn't it say "No dangerous weapons", not "No illegal weapons"? I know I'd be happier if people around me were only carrying safe, non-threatening weapons.

LOL. The sign says: "No dangerous weapons allowed." So, aren't all weapons dangerous? Isn't that the purpose of a weapon: to be dangerous?

Sometimes they are what are called "traditional weapons", meaning ceremonial.

On foot, normal-length spears and lances are awkward weapons since the head is shaped for stabbing, although they can double as quarterstaffs at closer range. On the other hand, the Zulu asegai is a short handled spear used as a one-hand weapon (with a shield in the other).
