but in the SB you already know what everyone will say. People complained about the friday posts here because the replies were pretty much the same, after a few weeks you knew what everyone would say with a couple of choices. The SB you know what will be said every day of the week. There will be the same posts, same insults, same posters, same opinions. It isn't about the language, sure the language is cleaner in the lounge, and yes the lounge breaks out in its problems. But the soapbox regulars espouse they are better because they can insult each other every day, the same way, the same insults, the same messages, the same replies, the same posts, every day of the week. Honestly the best thing in the soapbox is jokes with non-kidsister-friendly innuendo. The second best thing about the SB is it keeps the rest of the posts there out of here. The SB is aptly named because no one is debating or discussing, there is just a soapbox to stand on and get cheers or jeers and insult each other. You can sum up EVERY discussion of the soap-box with my reader's digest version. The replies and the posts are always the same. All subjects converge in those directions. If you had a discussion of Linux in the SB it would manage to find its route eventually to one of those extremes, or even all of them. The only creativity in the SB is occassionally the folks there manage to fit all of those arguments into the same thread, that takes some work I will admit.

Go back through the Lounge and look at 90% of the posts with those same comments in mind. Pay particular attention to posts about Microsoft, Vista, C#, Visual Studio [pick a release], Linux, VB, Indian coders, article quality, forum questions, etc... It is the same exact people making the same exact arguments.

but there are other posts, there are questions about iPod's that don't compare iPod users with the Devil or Terrorists. Somehow the all SB discussions end in the same place. You can ask about a color TV and not be told you are destroying the planet, or supporting Japan over america. I will admit car discussions head to the latter, but then it has been political in nature more so than electronics.

no, never so far... if they took place as far and as deep as the soapbox, then every such discussion would end in a murder. The soapbox goes to the point of making every post personal, you are with me, or with the terrorists, you are with me, or with the devil, you are with me or with the economic destruction of the world, you are with me or with the destruction of the planet. The soapbox is black and white, there is no discussion, there are a dozen people yelling at each other, and raising tempers until the only thing preventing physical confrontation is the fact this is an internet forum. No one has any intention of discussion in the soapbox, no one comes there to listen what someone else has to say, they go there to mouth off and cuss out and insult everyone who does not agree with them and praise anyone who does agree with them.

I'm sorry you had such a traumatic experience. I think that, while there are a couple of posters who have no concept of acceptable behavior, for the most part you mistake light for heat and smoke for fire, but I would guess that you wouldn't enjoy yourself posting in there.

even beter... they believe they are intellectually superior for having such "discussions" AND it really is one of the nicer ones. That is ultimately mild compared to most. Mike is right in that it is like having a discussion with my family, this is why I don't visit my family. Actually, come to think of it, I think everyone there is milder than my brother, even on a bad day in the SB.

Oh no, SB posters know that by not discussing how to keep bronze and silver members in their place, they prove their inferiority almost every day. ;)

are you saying there are other arguments there? show me a political discussion that doesn't compare everyone who disagrees with terrorists, or destroying the world, economic or physical, or the souls of disbelievers, or insult the intelligence for believing or disbelieving in something. I don't think that was a bad experience. I summed up the soap box pretty well, you just don't like hearing the summary. It may sound pretty bad when compressed to Reader's digest version, but it is the truth. All arguments go those directions, every single one, except for a joke or two, but even a few jokes get pulled those ways also. pick a subject, and you know who you will insult, and who the others will insult, you know what will be said, and eventually those comparisons will be made, one or all of them, and you will even make a few of those comparisons yourself, as will others. and you will cheer, and others will jeer or vice versa. And that is the soap box, summed up pretty accurately.

It might be of interest to note that 6 of the 10 posters to this thread (as I write) regularly post in SB. Isn't it nice that we clean up so well? :-D

most people pick out their clothes because they like the look, they have no idea what means what in another country. buyers buy clothes thinking they will sell based on look alone. I have a shirt that is a sushi menu in Japanese. I didn't find out until the Japanese tested out here. They got a kick out of it.

I think your diatribe is exactly the kind of post you are complaining about - you didn't use any four-letter words, but it demands that things be seen in black-and-white. When combined with your other posts on the subject, it seems clear that you regard those of us who post in SB as mentally or emotionally deficient and that the possibility that a reasonably intelligent, reasonably stable human might enjoy the give and take of SB without displaying sub-human tendencies seems never to have entered your mind. I would suggest that, if you have anything more to say that continues in this vein, that you take it to the Soapbox

hehehe, yeah, I could see me getting a tatoo of an oriental dragon with japanese writing on it, and the tattoo artist choosing the words "raw squid" because it looks good. :-D Luckily, I never got a tattoo! just wild shirts. :-D I will admit we all had a good laugh, and they read to me my shirt and we were laughing for at least 20 minutes. "hey what is this one?" "That is squid" and this? "fish eye soup"
