Just wondering, I'm currently in high school and have learned some basic java, and have taken a class on c++, I'm also currently teaching myself opengl, and am wondering what language should i learn next to be on the edge of programming? I know now that C# is a mix of c++ and VB. I'm just unsure of which languages to continue learning and which ones to start learning, any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

For obvious reasons, there's no "best" or "next" programming language. The language you choose depends on the problem you are trying to solve, coupled with your current skill set.

So you suggest I find an area that interests me like web-design or game programming and choose a language "best" to that?

Where on earth did you get that idea. C# is more like a combination of C++ and Java. VB.NET is the .NET VB (cunningly enough). Don't limit yourself to learning about "the next thing". Instead, try to pick up as many languages and ideas as you can - it's a damn site more fun that way.

You should learn some HTML so you can eliminate the unnecessary bold tags in your message.

True. But it also borrows from VB (e.g, properties) and Delphi. Plus the basic RAD/designer approach comes from VB. Though, this is not to do with the language per se.

Umm no. C# is more like an improved version of Java. If you know C#, VB is easy to pick up though.

Its good to know a bit about every language, but you'll want to specialise in one (or two if your bright) if you want the $$. It's hard to say which one... It sounds like VB.Net is the most widely used in industry, but C# is becoming popular. Java has been round for ages, so its a safe language to learn. Just find one you like the most, and stick with it. Cheers,

You can choose anyone you want. If you are expert in one language, you can learn others very fast. So the key is if you choose a language, you should learn well.
