If there is a specific article that you think has been poorly edited then just send me a note letting me know. As to why some aren't edited as well as others, it's because the only editors are Erik Thompson (who has gone back to having a life and doing his real job for a while) and me (who has no life and is trying to juggle too many things). I am talking with a couple of guys about getting them on board to help out. So send me an email with a list and I'll fix them. Simple as that. cheers, Chris Maunder

Everything I've read ...has read well to me There are a couple that I did a less than admirable job on. :-O I also know there are some articles that are simply not up to snuff, so maybe we need to get a list together of the articles you would like to see reworked. Help me out here guys and girls! cheers, Chris Maunder

My $.02 worth: Poor grammar and misuse of the English language irritates me just about as much as the next person, especially becuase my mom was a high school English teacher. But she was also a TOEFL(?) teacher, English as a Foreign Language. I have the utmost respect for those who do not have a firm grasp of the English language, and still have the desire and commitment to this site to contribute. Chris, keep up the great work; this is a fantastic site. For those who contribute - please keep doing so. Your comments and ideas are very much appreciated. For those who want to be nitpicky - fine. Go read one of your "professionally edited" magazines. As for me - I'll keep coming here first.

Poor grammar and misuse of the English language irritates me just about as much as the next person. I am presuming you are British then. If you are American then no doubt you are irritated greatly every time someone speaks to you :). I have nothing against us Americans using an English based language, but please, lets stop calling it either English, American English or US English - why not call it American? Why can't we have our own language? After all, it has some fairly major differences from proper English.

English is the language, American is the Dialect. Much like for Mexico, Spanish is the language, but they have their own Dialect which is different from Spanish spoken in Spain.

So does that mean I can speak two dialects? I'm still finding myself asking people to call me on my cell phone (instead of mobile phone), asking them "how you doing" (instead of "how are you going"), and still getting confused when someone says they will "table" something (means the exact opposite thing in Oz). As soon as I stop trying to pass people on their left side hand side instead of their RHS things will be back to normal. cheers, Chris Maunder

Just because y'all do drive on the right hand side of the road doesn't mean that you drive on the right side of the road.;P I do remember only to well being pulled up by a police officer while driving in New Jersey on my first trip to the States. I did a right turn at a T Intersection from the middle of the road instead of turning left and then doing a U turn. Talk about weird. Especially when you've left Oz on business a few months earlier and have travelled to UK, Europe, Japan and then the finally to the US. Its always great to get back home (to Oz) where we drive on the correct side of the road. Neville Franks, Author of ED for Windows www.getsoft.com

Mainly because you are speaking the English language. Thats why its called the English Language. In much the same way that most South Americans and Mexicans speak Spanish, and Brazilians speak Portuguese and some Canadians speak French. When did you last hear of an Argentinian speaking Argentinianese? Good grief. Stephen Kellett

Time and resources. Magazine editors edit, what 6-10 articles a month, and usually only take submissions from authors who can explain their topics relatively clearly. Codeproject gets multiple postings per day! Which is really, really cool, but is also a pretty major editorial load. Codeproject is also pretty unique in that it allows for the posting of unedited articles by authors, so that you can see the unvarnished articles right away which is also really cool. I'm sure you noticed that the unedited articles are presented in a different color motif than the edited ones. All that being said, I'd like to see an edited article you think is not up to snuff. Everything I've read that Chris, Erik and the other great guys have editied has read well to me... David

That's the answer I expected to hear: sheer volume of posts. I was mostly wondering what the editing paradigm was. From the replies, it seems that Chris is much more averse to "deep" editing than most magazine editors are. There's nothing wrong with that; it's simply a different opinion. I've yet to submit an article to a major magazine that wasn't chopped up pretty well (not only stylistically, but also substantively--one article actually had an entire section added because the editor wanted some more exposition). Every editor I've ever worked with is very honest about this: there's an explanation of why it happens at http://wdj.hightechinfo.com/authors/authedit.html. > Codeproject is also pretty unique in that it allows for the posting of > unedited articles by authors, so that you can see the unvarnished articles > right away which is also really cool I agree--it's a good idea. I read the "unedited articles" section, and I don't expect as high a standard of writing there. > All that being said, I'd like to see an edited article you think is not up > to snuff. I considered doing this at first, but I didn't intend to embarrass the original authors. I certainly don't want to imply that developing writing skills should keep people from writing useful articles! But since it's been requested by multiple people (including Chris!) here are two examples: http://www.codeproject.com/gdi/alphablend.asp [The first sentence sets the tone: "Do you want to cool splash window?"] http://www.codeproject.com/dialog/msgboxdemo.asp [misspellings and incorrect use of hyphens mar an otherwise very good article] I'd feel bad if I didn't also list some very well-written articles as counterexamples: http://www.codeproject.com/gdi/guiowner.asp [actually, I've yet to see an article by Mr. Newcomer that wasn't well-written and enjoyable]. http://www.codeproject.com/shell/shellextguide1.asp [the whole "Complete Idiot's Guide" is an excellent reference. I didn't meant to offend anyone with my statement, and I certainly don't want to imply that CodeProject isn't a valuable resource. Chris's hard work and dedication create a valuable service to the Windows programming community. As to why I didn't provide my name: I currently don't publish much on the web, only in "dead trees". I was concerned
