I am in Portland OR. I fly home on the weekend. Then, I come back to the US on July 2. In the middle, I mind the kids while my wife flies to her fathers 60th. So, I am home for a while from July 19. My sister emailed today to say my mother has cancer in her lymph nodes. My mother being a drama queen, no-one knows how bad it is, but it sure seems bad enough that I should be visiting, instead of being on the other side of the earth. Things always go wrong when I am away.

Wow :omg:. I hope your mom's OK :rose:. I understand about the 'drama queen' bit. My wife is a hypochondriac. When she was diagnosed with uterine cancer five years ago, it was like all of her worst nightmares come true at once. It wasn't easy for any of us. Hang in there, and keep us apprised when you can.

Well my condolences, that's what I had.  However I was, as the doctor's put it, very lucky.  Didn't really affect me and in fact had one of the most enjoyable years that I remember.  Ironic isn't it, hopefully you'll get as good a team as I did looking after me.  It really helped to know that whoever we phoned knew exactly what my situation was.

:rose: :rose: :rose: Just short of 10 years ago while my brother and I were in Ireland we received a call from home stating my mother had a seizure. 1 month later it was diagnosed as a cancerous brain tumor and 4 months later she died. 4 days after that my father died of a heart attack (with no prior symptoms). Please don't take your current situation casually. Get home. Tell your parent's you love and appreciate them (despite their imperfections) and be thankful you've known them.

That sounds like Hodgkins Lymphoma. It could go either way so don't take the drama queen stuff lightly. Lymph node cancer can be very serious.

I am very sorry about your mom. Hopefully they caught it early enough. I don't mean to tell you what to do Christian, but in your shoes I'd be getting on a flight home as soon as possible.

If I remember, your wife's grandpa died when you were gone. I'm very sorry to hear about your mom. If it was found early, lymphatic cancer is one that can be treated more easily than other cancers (assuming it's non-Hodgkins). I have an aunt that ever since I can remember she has had some form of cancer. First it was skin cancer, then thyroid, and liver. About every 18 months I get a call from my cousin. I've never gotten an "all clear" so I just always assume she has it. She's had 2/3 of her liver removed, yet being in her 80's she lives on her own and still cooks for the holidays. If your mom is a stubborn old bird, her mental fight can do a lot to help. My prayers are with you and your mom. Completely OT, have you been in the US during July 4th?

Like many before...My deepest thoughts are with your mother. It is a bugger but it can be beaten. My grandmother beat liver cancer before she passed (she was 95 at the end and died of COAD, outlived her doctor). PMA! Positive Mental Attitude. I can only hope she has the strength too to beat the disease. I am sure we all in here wish her well!

Dang man. ...{looks down}... ...{wonders why / what to say}... ... ...{walks off unsure of a lot of things}... That just totally is planet earth. What a bad rap. I can relate though. My mom had it when I was 7. They removed a 27 pound tumor and more or less they got it all because she is still here and the cancer... well... it's gone. May you get home without trouble and find things are better than you feel right now.

I'm sorry to hear that, Christian. I hope things work out OK for you and your family.

                                  Cheers, Vikram.

Hey Christian, my best wishes for your mom. My mom had lymphoma but she beat it. It's been about 15 years since she was first diagnosed, but although her white cell count is very low, she keeps chugging along - at 80 years young. She's active in the Pittsburgh art scene, and keeps cranking out masterpieces. OK - shameless plug, you can see her works at gghersch.com. Keep your hopes up, and your prayers coming.

That sounds like Hodgkins Lymphoma. It could go either way so don't take the drama queen stuff lightly. Lymph node cancer can be very serious.
