My point is that in her specific case talent does matter, because it is so rare. Did you hear anything by her? There's a huge list of artists that I admire in spite of regrettable behavior, not only pop stars (e.g: Gaughin, VanGogh, Proust, etc). Should I dismiss her work just because of her behavior? Similarly, should I dismiss Bach's music just because I am not a Christian? P.S.: No, I am not comparing her talent to all those other artists above.

Sad that the list of talented people with this problem is so long: Jimmy Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, Chet Baker, Keith Richards, Jim Morrison, Bob Marley, Maurice Ravel, Ray Charles, ...

Ok, I hate pop divas. They seem all to fall into 3 categories: a) The screaming divas just look that they're constantly being sliced with a bread knife (Celine Dion, Joss Stone, Whitney Houston, etc.) b) The dumb dolls divas look like they can't say 2 words without the supervision of a producer and 3 counselors (Britney Spears, Shakira, Cristina Aguillera, Nelly Furtado, etc). c) The "my silly, childish, stupid problems are the most important in the universe" divas look like... well like that, really (Avril Lavigne, Alanis Morisette, Courtney Love, etc.) Then there is this Amy Winehouse. As most of you know she is a cross of a sub-Kiss make-up, an over B-52's hair dress, a worse than Keith Richards' behavior and Carly Simon's face. Without listening I just classified her as another c) case. And then a friend of my girlfriend just showed me some songs by her. Wow! She can really sing (I mean: with technique, vocal amplitude, sense of swing and rhythm and even sense of humor)! She composes! She is skilled! There is a brain there! If you like Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Janis Joplin, Nina Simone, Mahalia Jackson I urge you to go to youtube and check the clips of "Back to Black", "You Know I'm No Good", "Rehab" (I think all composed by her). I think she is at that level.

If you like that, check out Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings[^] responsible for the music behind Winehouse's voice on Back to Black. Good stuff...

Just did, and it's almost all sung on one note! I could have written that! I also think her voice is a bit...well...odd, a little rough, like she's singing in the back of her throat? Singing aside, like Ozzy, she's major proof that drugs really screw you up. Don't do it, kids!

She *can* sing and when she's not spiralling down in one of her bad times she's pretty hot. She's keeping alive the rock and roll lifestyle, someone has to. :)

Ha! You are too funny. Since when in the entire course of human history have musicians *EVER* been considered role models by any straight laced person? Your comment to me sums up everything that's gone wrong with people in the 21st century so far. Ooohh must protect little Johnny from bad influences, can't let him eat dirt or see naked people or whatever garbage is currently in vogue. Amy Winehouse is talented, sucessful and doing what she likes to do with a rude gesture to anyone who tells her otherwise and is clearly messed up at times to a degree that no intelligent young person would want to emulate, in other words a real honest human being, to me that's the best kind of role model there is.

She should be banged up for the amount of times she's been caught with class A drugs, not to mention assault, but "celebrities" always seem to get off with noting more than a slap on the wrist. If your average member of the public was caught doing what she has, they'd be locked up.

That's because an average person is just...average. And why should people who choose to be average in life get any perks whatsoever. Independant spirits that *do* something in the world deserve a little bit of judicial welfare.
