How about GTA 4? Or is that not out yet? I'd be considering buying a PS3 for that game alone.

GTA 4 is out and is as awesome as MGS 4. :) GTA 4 was released last month. It is much better than the previous games due to better car handling and a good variety of missions. One of the more difficult missions is a bank heist where things go horridly wrong. You have to protect two people as you work your way through several waves of cops and a helicopter. It's pretty intense. Some missions are much easier, and some are pretty creative. The city is very gritty looking in spots and quite beautiful at other spots. The lights at night in Star Junction (Times Square) are particularly nice looking. MGS 4 was released yesterday. At the very beginning of the game you're dropped into a Middle Eastern hot zone where the local militias are fighting a PMC (Private Military Corporation). The militias have the PMC outnumbered, but the PMC forces have a swarm of Gekkos -- highly mobile bipedal tanks. The Gekkos have thick armor and high-caliber machine guns while the militia forces have assault rifles and the occasional RPG launcher. You have to sneak through the bloodbath and try to meet up with a group of informants as part of the first mission. Flynn

I faced the same decision a few months back and ended up with a PS3, which I do not regret one bit. If gaming is your primary focus they have a handfull of good games out right now, and a solid list of future releases. You can't beat it for movies, as blu-ray is slowly gaining more momentum, and if digital downloads become more prevelant the size of the harddrive is better than the alternative consoles. I also installed Ubuntu on my PS3 this week and have been playing around with that.

Hi, Chad. What games do you play? I have quite a few and would like to play some more online. :) I installed YellowDog, but I've been thinking about trying the PS3 build of Ubuntu. I prefer Ubuntu as a distro, so having it on my PS3 and laptop would be great. :) Flynn

My NES still works fine. The kid likes "the running and jumping game" -- Super Mario Brothers.

I think I'm going to splash out next month and get a gaming console.  My prime candidate is an XBox 360.  Anyone think I should look elsewhere?

Follow the rule of picking the games you want to play and then the console that plays them. While many games are on multiple consoles, several are exclusive.

GTA4 is also available for the 360. It even looks better in that version. But hey! What we're really looking forward to is Starcraft 2, isn't it?

My husband has just about every gaming console. He still likes the old Dreamcast and the PS3 best. The XBox 360 has been plagued with issues over the years. However, you can usually find lots of used jobs at pawn shops or used game/cd shops. We also play our Gamecube still quite a bit. I play the DS Lite also.

I'd get the PS3. Blu-Ray drive helps. As someone mentioned though if a console has an exclusive that you want then you'll have to weigh that into the decision.

It is starting to look most attractive as a media device as well as a console.

I've had a PS3, XBox and a Wii...Wii is a great family gaming console (my 3 year old grandaughter beat the snot out of me in boxing when I first played...ouch!). We have friends over occasionaly, drink a few drinks and play Wii...great times (except that means I can't play EQ2).

The PlayStation 3 can make a lot of sense depending on what you're looking for. It is one of the best Blu-Ray players on the market -- current firmware supports BD-Live (BD Profile 2.0); Metal Gear Solid 4 is out and is a fantastic game; online gameplay is free (though not as good as Xbox Live yet); PlayStation Network has some excellent downloadable games (Super Stardust HD is awesome!); DVD upscaling is excellent; internal hard drive is easily upgradeable since it uses 2.5" SATA notebooks drives -- I've updated mine to 160 gb; you can install Linux on it; support for a number of video and audio codecs such as DivX and AAC; backwards compatible with PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 games (PS2 compatibility only with 20, 60 and 80 gb models); and support for DNLC media servers. I own one and just picked up MGS4 last night. Excellent game. I also play FIFA 08 online with one of my co-workers. Beyond that, I have a number of games and Blu-Ray movies for it. I wouldn't trade the system for the world. :-\ Flynn

I just rented RAMBO this weekend. There was a menu entry Molog, which downloaded some applet (java?) to the PS3. It looked like you can script some kind of story with images, animation and sound. Don't understand it really, but it impressed me that someone is starting to employ the BluRay 2.0 features.

I have a few gaming systems around the house, heh. The PS3 is easily my favorite. I also have the PlayStation Portable, the Nintendo DS, the PlayStation 2 and original PlayStation, the Nintendo 64 / SNES / NES, just about every model of GameBoy (except the VirtualBoy), and even two of the original Atari 2600 systems. All are in working condition and each has several games. I currently buy games for the PS3, PSP and DS the most, but I also pick up the occasional PS2 game. :) Flynn
