Is there a way to sort a list of files in a folder by name without pushing the directories to the top of the listing (in Windows XP, if that makes a difference). I want the files and directories intermingled and sorted only by the text of the file/directory name. I've been using/programming computers for 30 years and I never thought to ask if this is a problem I can easily solve. It's frustrating when I have a huge directory of files (let's say of music, for example) organized alphabetically. If I want to combine a bunch of files into one entry, I create a directory and put all the related files in there. Then I can't find what I want because they are not where they should be alphabetically. You end up having to check two places in the listing, the directory list at the top and then the files list below.

I've never seen an option like that in windows alone, although I much prefer to have the folders separate so i've never looked. If you don't end up finding what you want in windows explorer, then perhaps a different file explorer will give you what you want, there's bound to be plenty of free or open source file viewers out there.

If command line is an option, use dir /on

Mac OS X does this by default and it reallyy bugs me. I wish I could get Windows behaviour and have all the directories at the top. (No idea how to change it in Windows, sorry.)
