The storyline goes like this... You decide to test Pete's articles :) and start your own software development company. How do you name it? Do you follow some guidelines, or just fund a word that sounds cool, no matter if it has anything to do with what the company does... How do you come up with the name ?

What do you want to convey? The name must reflect the image you want to present. That's it.

Here's my thinking: You want something that should relate on some mental level to whatever it is that your company will do. It can even be a puzzle of sorts, think double entendres[^]. You want something that has some kind of appeal to your target audience (customer in this case). Keep in mind that "cool" wears off after a little while, so it has to have longevity, not just be cool today. Most important: It can't be a registered trademark or even be close enough to one to be confused with a registered trademark.

Personally, I think the service or product you provide should somehow be conveyed in your company name.

1. Don't start with a number. 2. Try to be as up in alphabetic order as possible. 3. Try a name with a verb potential (e.g. Google it is a name with a verb potential) Except for 1 which is from my experience, the rest of the points are from Guy Kawasaki.
This has been discussed, again and again and again and always we (the denizens of the CP lounge) have come to the conclusion that their method of rating is pure, untouched, unadulterated, genuine, verifiable, refined trash. MIM on TIOBE

Ask your 4 year old. Or maybe name it after your daughter Wendy. I also like to pick the three most offensive words I can find, shorten them and then play with the letter order. Then I try out a few options on my target audience. Company names that sound like you're swearing are really popular with the younger crowd but aren't a good choice if you're shooting for the middle-aged or silver crowd. On a more serious vein, company names that evoke an emotion or image that is compatible with your product or service can be quite powerful. Different spellings on a common word are popular but it doesn't help much in your search engine placement. If your target audience is from a particular industry, make a list of common words and acronyms used in that industry and try abbrevieated cominations. Another great method is a brainstorming session. Put several minds to work at it. Collect ALL of the suggestions and create a few choices. Try these choices out on your target market. Let them vote.

Don't ignore just using the most obvious where you bluntly state what it is you sell. This is often the best approach for a new company. Based on personal experience, do make sure your company name is easily pronounced and spelled.

I read that a little too quickly and I thought I saw "You decide to pet Pete's testicles...". I'm glad I went back and re-read it before directing the OP to the SoapBox... :)

Well first and foremost you have to find something that clears as not being a registered domain name. I find the best method is to go to an online news or blog site that is semi related to whatever it is you are doing and try to find to consecutive words from different lines that can be put together to make a new word. That's usually the quickest way. Forget about trying to convey what you do in the name, it will be all but impossible to register as a domain name and even when you do you will find someone somewhere with something *very* similar that will send you a nice legal notice about stepping on their trademark.

Yeah, start with the domain name...unless you have some bucks.
