How exactly is this a Vista annoyance? Even if XP was within the box, the sticker might have been destroyed.

Because I have a history of pointing out all the ways that Vista sucks, I am continuing that trend. XP never came in a box like this.

I take it you uninstalled then. If not just use jellybean to get the key.

But the box looks nice, surely that's what matters?

So, I bought Vista Ultimate. Ages ago, when I still thought it may be a real OS. I am not running it anywhere, and I want to put Windows on my Mac. Seems OK to me. Except, I find the box, and the ONLY place they put the code, is on a sticker on the OUTSIDE of the box. That sticker has been destroyed by something, I don't have a single character of the access code I need to install Vista.

I'm curious was it an OEM or Retail version?  I had the OEM one a while ago and while the authenticity sticker was on the outside of the DVD case it was wrapped up inside another cardboard case provided by Microsoft & sealed up.  Was actually a pain to get into they'd sealed it so well.  Then there was the wrapping from the shipping company which was impressive to say the least. You do seem to get all the bad luck with Vista and I pitty you :sigh:

It's retail, the fancy plastic box does NOT have any stickers or other codes inside it

I don't have Vista and don't know it's activation process. Don't you have a customer code or something like that? Microsoft might had been placed a code or something inside the DVD or created a record in the registration server and be able to retrieve it again? Is this not possible?

If you have that silly fold out box you may find that the Product Key is on the inner tray on the side opposite to the DVD mount. If it's not there run the free Jelly Bean key finder (as someone else mentioned). You can get it from here: http://magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder Write the key on the DVD with a Sharpie felt mark and on the box and in an address or note book and in the Quick Start Guide. You may lose or misplace one but not all.

Odd. On my Ultimate Upgrade box (fancy retail plastic pain-in-the-posterior box) it's on the backside of the DVD tray portion. Flynn
