USB 3.0

Its getting quiet here.. Here's an interesting quote of a great mind I've been admiring of recently. Big Boss talking to embedded expert. Big Boss running out of ideas on new projects so he gave a suggestion to the embedded expert. Big Boss: "Why don't you develop USB 3.0? Just ZIP the file and send it through USB 2.0." And here I am thinking about USB 4.0. I'll use RAR and send it through USB 2.0.

Push the envelope - use 7z instead... :) I thank my lucky stars that I have management that actually have a clue technically - and can recognise where they don't...

How does RAR compare to 7zip? Some (probably general settings) 406MB rar file re-7-zipped to 288MB (7z, BZip2, Ultra).
We are a big screwed up dysfunctional psychotic happy family - some more screwed up, others more happy, but everybody's psychotic joint venture definition of CP

Is that a real quote? If so, this would be the best ever.

Lucky you. I'm one of a dozen developers in the middle of a hardware company that's run by hardware engineers, and we'll do things the hardware way, dammit! If Microsoft handled software development the way we do, Bill Gates would be crack-head mini-market attendant.

I wasn't really aware of 7zip until today :) so it's been RAR for me since then.
The comparisons say it's better, so give it a try :) http://www.7-zip.org/[^]

What's wrong with doing things the hardware way? I'm an hardware engineer and I spend great part of my time in teaching software newbyes that they cannot program a coffe machine as if it had a 5GHz processor with 8GB of RAM (and maybe also a 1TB HD just to roll some icons in the 160 dot display). Working with limited resources, keeping the best from a 40MHz processor with 256kB of flash and only 128 of RAM is a good excercise for your mind. Try it. And just to remind you about the engineering capabilities of Microsoft just read this: http://www.snopes.com/humor/jokes/autos.asp[^]

The first type was made up of "experimental compressors" that didn't care about speed or memory usage. The second was like the first but with "some degree of user friendliness" though with non-standard formats.
From http://www.maximumcompression.com/data/summary_sf.php[^]
The last group is the 'everyday use' archiver. This are GUI driven programs with good compression, but without sacrificing speed and without excessive memory usage like the group 1 and 2 programs. Apart from the GUI it is important the program is fast, easy to use, and supports many different archive formats (or is a standard itself). The best archivers in this group are WinRar and 7-Zip. Maybe WinZip 10 (using PPMd-mode) has a place here too.
With 7-Zip in the lead...

I'm talking about the administrative way we handle software. We consistently fail to respond to the customer in a timely fashion because of the byzantine engineering process we're required to go through to release new versions. Our software release process is defined and controlled by hardware engineers without the faintest clue as to what they're doing.

Been there, done that. I've programmed on everything from PIC micros to VaxClusters to basic PC's to servers with 64G RAM on board. I actually enjoy opportunities to program "in the small", since my mainstream development effort involves a multiple-machine, multiple-process product with over a million lines of code in it.

You know something? The engineering capabilities of Microsoft are just fine. We here at CP may bitch and moan about them a lot, but all things considered, Microsoft consistently delivers a reasonably well thought-out product.
