My system has suddenly started making beeing noises (form the internal speaker) randomly, but at least a few every ten seconds or so, normally in short bursts, but with no identifiable pattern. The first time I heard them it shut down my system, took the case off and had a quick check that everytihng was connected correctly - no problem. So I started up and was met with yet more beep boop beep boop boop boop noises!! Eak! I am using a different machine now 'cause I don't want to damage it unecessarily, but does anyone know what the hell is going on? Loose connection? Overheating? Help me!

Hmmm. Scary. My first thought would be keyboard related. Computers tend to beep when you type something that's a bit out of line. If there was some circuitry gone bad in the keyboard causing intermittent shorts, it might be sending the computer something it didn't like. It would be an easy test to swap keyboards & see if that was it. Secondly, on a Windows system, you typically don't get much out of the internal speaker if there's a sound card. If you are, maybe somethings gone south with your sound card, which might explain why the internal speaker is being called into use. If neither of those work, I'd recommend sacrificing a goat. Normally I use chickens, but this is a hardware problem... Chistopher Duncan Author - The Career Programmer: Guerilla Tactics for an Imperfect World (Apress)

I'd say it's the mouse or keyboard as well, so long as they use PS/2. Other than that, blame it on the French... ;P While we're on the subject of beeping, I got rid of my "Empty Recycle" bin sound in the multimedia settings (changed it to "None") and no it beeps from the PC speaker whenever I empty the recycle bin. Wonderful. Cheers, Peter Pearson

Thanks for the responses guys, but it doesn't appear to be a keyboard or mouse problem (i.e. it still beeps when everything is unplugged). I think I may have found it though - the CPU fan is not going round, it appears that the motor has burnt out. :(( Luckily £3.00 and a few days later I should have a new one. God bless eBay.

It's prolly your hardware monitor acting. Enter in BIOS Setup, check the monitors for something not quite right. Concussus surgo. When struck I rise.

Don't use your PC again. Turn it off now not in 5 minutes but now ! Get your CPU fan checked immediately. It has probably been overheating. Regardz Colin J Davies
