My notebook broke, the power supply snapped internally, I have no idea how or why. I took it in for repair, the local store paid to overnight it so I'd have it back for my US trip this Wed. They called late today to say they want approval to do the job b/c they will charge me $35. So, for $35, I have no PC for my US trip. and, the thing sucks anyhow. 70 min battery life. All sorts of weird behaviour ( even when not running vista ). I would never buy another.

That exact same problem happened with my laptop (Advent). The socket that the power cable goes into literally fell off inside the laptop. I whipped the case off, found the part rattling around, pulled out my soldering iron from it's quick access belt holster while trying to act like some kind of cool techy version of Indiana Jones, waited 10 minutes for it to heat up, reattached the bit and put the case back on. It worked for a while, but that was towards the end of it's life anyway. :)

Things I hate: People who use excel like a database. Bad/rude customer service in shops. That it's taken until 2008 for SQL server to get a proper 'time' data type. I've got to wait another few years until the company starts to move to 2008 before I can even think about using it. Mussels, and any similarly slimy seafood. Companies who call me up and ask 'security questions' that require me to give out personal information to a stranger. ;) Celebrity gossip magazines.

What model are you using? I own an old L3800 that only needed a battery replacement when the original died (Also the Fn key sometimes works). I replaced it with a VX2 and have two minor complaints: battery life is only acceptable with Blutooth and Wi-Fi turned off and the system sometimes does not wake up correctly after a suspend (the cooling fan sometimes does not work upon resuming so the box overheats and shuts down). I'm not sure if this is a Vista issue or a hardware issue, but probably it's a faulty Asus driver.

The battery life on my new one is a joke. It's a FX7 or something, I forget, I plainly don't have it here to look.

I've been looking at some recent "professional" HP models with a protuding battery that claim to have 5+ hours of battery life. One of them seemed quite intersting with a 15" wide screen and my favorite screen resolution: 1680x1050. I have to say that I was impressed and tempted to buy one for me. The overall quality also seemed quite good. I also forgot to mention that my VX2 has the cooling fan exhaust on the right side, which tends to burn my right hand when using the mouse (was the VX2 designed for left-handed people only?). This problem was "solved" with a cooling aluminum stand which I cannot carry around with me when traveling (how convenient). When working at a customer location I always ask for a medium-sized book or manual to raise the back of the machine... And this is supposed to be a high-end machine.

I hate them too! I have Video card driver issue. The card manufacturer cannot provide driver update due to comercial agreement with laptop vendor (namely ASUS) and, quite obviously, ASUS has no care about providing any kind of driver update. ASUS is bad!

Same with HP TX1016AU[^]. The thing heats up the table (or whatever it is kept on) like a burner and I'll always have to use a book or something under the notebook so that the exhaust is slightly elevated. I found the notebook to be very good, but the heat exhaust keeps killing me.

When it goes too far and something serious happens and suddenly everyone realises it was a bit of a sick idea all along. (Anyone seen that episode of Judge John Deed where someone gets killed in a big bro style reality TV show because the producers push them too far an cause an accident. Don't normally watch it, but It was pretty interesting, and worryingly what big bro is like, I really could see it happening)

My last home build was an Asus board with an Intel Core 2 Duo, my first move away from an Abit mobo with AMD CPU. Although it said it supported RAIDed SATA, the RAIDed drives had to be one on the special internal RAID SATA socket, and the other on the external SATA socket. WFT? Needless to say it'll be Abit again next time.

I love them, never had any issues with their products for what must be going on a decade now, of course I've never bought a notebook from them, just motherboards and video cards mainly.

Yeah, unfortunately he negated all the other items on his list by clearly showing he was insane when he put mussels on the list. :)

I curse them too, but because I have an older computer that keeps on running. The damn thing won't die. I discovered a capacitor at the bottom of the case the other day and it still keeps on running. The bastards.

I haven't had the power plug snap off of the contacts yet, but my wife's Aspire 1680 has already lost one hard drive and is having some intermittent problems with its replacement. This past weekend it somehow locked kernel32.dll on the disk; it blue screened on boot naming that file as inaccessible and when I tried to repair Windows, it locked trying to overwrite that file. However, this turned out to be the perfect time to try to convert to Ubuntu, which seems to have picked up all of the laptop hardware with no problems. Now I just have to worry about her learning how to use apt-get...

Imagine that you are hired to build a bridge over a river which gets slightly wider every day; sometimes it shrinks but nobody can predict when. Your client provides no concrete or steel, only timber and cut stone (but they won't tell you what kind). The coefficient of gravity changes randomly from hour to hour, as does the viscosity of air. Your only tools are a hacksaw, a chainsaw, a rubber mallet, and a length of rope. Welcome to my world. -Me explaining my job to an engineer
