iPod or Zune
-
I never thought I'd say this but I'm thinking of getting a Zune. My old (well, one-day-past-warranty) iPod nano has become so unstable that it's barely usable. I was thinking of getting another then realised the Zune has - Wifi - A radio - support for WMA - a lower price tag - longer battery life Anyone had experience (and comments) with both?

I have an iPod that I never use, and some of my coworkers have Zunes they never use. Both are serving the purpose just fine.

I've never used a Zune... I have an iPod nano (2GB from, whoah, 3 years ago?) and like it, but I've heard good things about the UI of the Zune. My biggest question about the Zune would be its syncing software. iTunes gets the job done with iPods, although it certainly has issues. I'd rip my own fingernails out if I had to use Media Player to do it though... MP seems to do everything to 90% satisfaction, and getting that final 10% is enough to drive you insane. (Ripping, burning, library management... it's all JUST annoying enough to make me not use it.) My iPod recently just decided to mark its entire library as "used space" but I couldn't play any music. I was able to reset it and reload it though. I'm hoping it doesn't get increasingly unstable, I think I've been lucky so far. Have you tried Apple about a warranty repair? A couple years ago they replaced my daughter's Gen 1 Nano even though it was 1-2 months out of warranty.

The wife and daughter each have Nanos. A Gen 1 and Gen 2. Other than the screen issue on the Gen 1 both have been fine. My son has a Gen 1 Zune (the larger HD version) and other than poor battery life it works great. Side Note: I still use a really old Gen 1 Dell DJ. When it dies (could be soon - she's acting flaky lately :~ ) I'm looking at iPods. I hope it lasts until the fall when Apple usually introduces new models.

I want a small, ultra-light-weight music device. I do not want an over-priced brick aimed more at pleasing phone companies rather than those who actually need to use it.

Have had a zune for about 6 months now. Use it pretty much every day. Seamless integration with SYNC (I have an 08 ford focus). Software to interface with it is not the best but it gets the job done. I wish they would release an api so we could write our own library management for the thing. Music sound quality is excellent although there is no real graphic equalizer. I was worried about that at first but the sound quality has been so good that I didn't really need it. I have the 8 GB version that was released late last year. Also my entire library is in wma format so that may be an important factor to consider. My wife has a similar ipod (Had to get that because it was available in pink!) and she hates it compared to the zune

Love my zune I have a 4 gig. The picture is great for movies. ANd it sounds really good. The software is MUCH better than ITunes IMHO. The out of the box earbuds the sponges kept falling off, but just get yourself another set.
It's not my fault you suck.

I love my Mac, but iPods are overpriced and rubbish. They are just too fragile, and too expensive. Personally, I love my Zen - it's small, it recharges, it was cheap, and 4GB is more that enough music for me to carry ( they don't make the player that can hold all my CDs, so that's just off the cards anyhow ). And, when it cost < $100, I don't have to worry about it, I just use it.

I've had a 80GB Zune for a little over six months now and it's great. I like to listen to music at work and the battery can usually hold up between two to three days at a time, so somewhere around 18-24 hours. I've tried watching movies on it, and the screen is surprisingly good for it, it's bright and responsive, although I still can't handle watching video on something that small when I almost always have a computer near by. The Zune software isn't the best syncing software I've ever dealt with, but it's simple and gets the job done. You can only have the Zune synced with one computer, however you can still add it as a guest with any other computer to add music from that library. I haven't messed with the wifi much, but it will drain your battery faster, so I leave it turned off. The glass screen is also surprisingly durable. About a week ago I accidentally dropped my cellphone on the screen from about two feet and it didn't even leave a scratch. Just wiped it off and it's good as new. Being glass, the screen is very susceptible to fingerprints, though. The only real complaint I have about the Zune is the lack of an equalizer, but I can let that go. Now that XNA 3.0 allows for Zune development there are games on the horizon for an added distraction. Maybe I can even hack together a software equalizer... One annoyance I just remembered, if you want to charge it without plugging it into a computer you'll have to buy a separate adapter...

I have an iPod Shuffle. Real small, clips on wherever you want, plays in order or picks songs at random. Good Luck

Well I have a Creative Zen Vision:M I'm very happy with, which has a radio and supports WMA. No wifi though. I know it isn't the 'super portable' thing you're after, but perhaps the Zen Micros might fill your needs?
I have one of those too, I watch it on plane trips

I had both Ipod and Zune, Zune is simple and great(get the 80 gb one), but IPod Touch is just awesome(but pricey).

I had one I received as a gift, was out of waranty and had a bustesd screen. Took it to Apple and they replaced it on the spot free of charge. The radio in the Zune is pretty attractive though
