Evil Computers? just a thought prompted by reading Dial-up users "don't want broadband"

Dial-up users "don't want broadband"[^] I read this article, and got to thinking. I know people who will not even use a computer, much less the Internet. They believe that the technology is evil, a tool of the devil, etc. They use phones (land lines) and cars, etc they just do not trust computers. You should hear some of the rants that I've heard about the government and the push to expand Internet coverage here in America. Now these are good people, the type that would give the shirt off there back to help someone if they thought the person needed it, and never doubt or think twice about it. I know four people who believes this, they are not related and with the exception of two who know each other trough me, they do not know each other. I've actually converted one, he still will not use a computer, but he comes to me to look up information for him. Mostly on old western movies and book, that he collects. These four people are older, and vote religiously. If statistics are to be believed older people vote much more often than younger people as well as being more likely to sit through a phone call answering a survey. Now the first thing someone doing a poll like this would ask would be. "Do you own or use a computer connected to the Internet." But I may be giving too much credit to the poller. I've had some call that have topics all over the spectrum, not even sure what they were polling for. You know how it is a little bored, so mess with the poler's head night. So, here's the question. Do you know anyone like this, what's your thoughts, is there are a large enough community out there that believe this. Could they effect polls without the poller realizing who they are talking too. People like this are not going to have a blog or website, where they are members. So you may know someone and not even know it.

Yes, I have a few neighbors who are not willing to pay the extra $5/month for low-end broadband, and yet want to know how to speed up their internet connection

We didn't get cable Internet until a year ago. We could have gotten it (Road Runner) when we lived in San Diego, but would have had to give it up when we moved to L.A. When the cable company in L.A. finally offered Internet we could have gotten it, but again didn't want to give it up if (when) we moved. When we moved to Scottsdale we could have gotten cable Internet, but the budget was too tight. Now we have a house and the budget isn't as tight, so we finally got cable Internet! :-D Last weekend we visited her family and I found their DSL connection painfully slow. So, one reason not to get a high-speed connection is not wanting to have to revert to a slower one later. You can't miss what you never had.

Sir Clive Sinclair the inventor of the ZX80, ZX81, ZX Spectrum... does not use the internet! He gets his IT information via printed journals. This is the man who bought home computing to the UK!

My late father, if alive today, would never have the internet period. He could not figure out call waiting and had me cancel it. He was very simple. We had a neighbor come to bale the hay, and we (me driving the horses, my father and sometimes my older brother) would pick up the bales manually. He could not figure out how to turn the tv to NBC if the VCR was on. My first cousin is just about as bad. When she called to say her "computer died" and I asked a series of questions she could not even tell me the maker of the computer. I think her 80+ year old mother does better with the internet. I can understand a decade ago when you had the dumb users who thought the CD-rom holder was for holding a pop or held up a piece of paper in front of the monitor thinking it was "scanning." But there are so many free computer basics seminars in every small community that if the user does not take the time to learn, then screw them.

I don't know anyone thinking like that; my grandma recently bought a notebook and is writing emails every day now.. :) But I can imagine that people aren't as often to new technologies when they get older. Althoug it seems a bit extreme to me that they say computers are 'evil'.

If all you do is send a few emails, perhaps check a few blogs, maybe a movie site, why would you need broadband?
