I just saw The Happening. Seriously. What has happened to M. N. Shyamalan? I used to love his films, but lately they have just become worse and worse, and The Happening is about as bad as it gets. Once he was heralded as the new Spielberg. I think not. I hope he recovers and regains his creative strengths of the past.

He put all his good ideas into his first movie and has struggled with being pigeon holed ever since. Does Speilberg make only one sort of movie ?

Darn! I was thinking of seeing that movie. Can you say what was wrong with it?

Lame acting. Decent idea for a story rendered limp through stilted direction. Lack of empathy with the characters.

Deja View - the feeling that you've seen this post before.

Nothing. It's just he did an awesome job in his first movies and no-one can keep that up. Now people almost demand that his movies to have some kind of major 'twist', which hamstrings his writing.

Good idea. Terrible execution. Strange acting. Takes illogical behavior to a new level. It is apparent that he's trying to get away from his usual plot-twist driven movies, but this time it's almost as if he has abandoned they idea of a plot altogether. I usually likes his directing and camera style, but this was just bad. Bad. Bad.

The problem with people who are hailed as the new .... is that they have so many expectations to live up to that the pressure can end up getting to them.

I agree. I almost didn't wanted to post about it because it is just so easy to shit all over other people's work. There's nothing worse than a arm chair coach. It's just that I usually love his films, and I was sooooo disappointed with this one.. I hope he bounces back.

Exactly. When I saw The Village (which I liked) I was just trying to turn everything upside-down to see if I could find the plot twist. Which I did like 15 minutes into the movie. I think he tried to reinvent himself and fly out of that pigeon hole with The Happening. Unfortunately, seeing how bad it is, it may be that it only proves that he's a one trick pony. I hope not though.

I'm still surprised people liked The Sixth Sense. It's quite annoying to figure out the twist halfway through and trying to live in denial the rest of the movie. At least the ending of The Sixth Sense wasn't as thunderously stupid as the rest of his crap.

Yeah I can see that guessing the twist halfway into the movie makes for an awful movie experience. But for us who didn't - remember back then MNS was totally unknown (for me at least) and so was his twist-driven stories - The Sixth Sense was amazing.
