My otherwise wonderful ViewSonic tube monitor on my home computer has decided to switch to hibernate mode on a seemingly random basis. So the time has come to switch to a widescreen LCD. (One reason for delaying has been the lack of games that work properly at 1680x1050.) I've narrowed my choices down to an HP2007 and either a 20" or 22" Acer (AL2016WDB or 2216). The HP gets consistently high compliments except for crappy speakers (Edit: which I only mention since that appears to be the only complaint--I already have speakers). The Acer has gotten good reviews, but also very rotten ones. Any experience with these?

I've got an HP2007 I use as a secondary monitor that I'm happy with though I've never used the speakers. I've haven't had any problems with it in the 9 or so months I've had it.

I own nothing but Acers now and I love them. No bad pixels, no dead units... I recommend them.

LCD Monitors do not render colour properly. You like to consider the fact. You should buy monitor that has DVI inputs atleast.

I have. Except for the periodic shutoff problem, I really like my ViewSonic, which is why I've held off switching for so long.

Until it dies... then you have to pay for the shipping to get it fixed...

If it dies, we'l replace it. It's not like the things cost £1000 each anymore, is it? (BTW this particular unit is 18 months old already, so it's already paid it's way in productivity terms). Rightly or wrongly, hardware is turning into a commodity. We've just bought two Operon servers* for £99 each... :omg: * Entry level to be sure, but with 5GB memory they certainly hum along as dev boxes.

That works well if you are able to do that... the point is that I will not be buying another acer monitor (or anything for that matter) because of their crap customer service.

I've had three HP 20" TFT monitors at work over the last three or four years - I got the first one then and I added two more when I (had to) get a second PC at the end of 2007. They are (I think) 1 x hp2035 (the old one) and 2 x hp2065 (the two new ones). They've been utterly reliable and excellent to use for up to 12 hours / day. Thoroughly recommend them. The HP workstation I got (an xw4400) is very good as well.

Fair enough - we have the same policy with respect to Dell and Sony. Both gave us the runaround, and are permanently blacklisted as a result. At the end of the day you just have to make a choice based on your own experience. :rose:
