Getting old

Went to the eye doctor today. Wife badgered me into it, seems to think i need to go every year. Bah. But this year, for the first time, there was actually a change in the results. Astigmatism starting to show up. Not enough to warrant wearing corrective lenses (vision's down to roughly 20/20 from roughly 20/15), but noticeable. Both of my parents were wearing glasses before the age of twenty, and i spend ridiculous amounts of time reading... really, i've long expected to be worse off than this by now... but it's still A Sad Realization. :sigh:

I was gutted when the optician told me that my eyes were misshapen[rugby ball shaped](I don't know what the name for that is, it might be what you're talking about) and that it wasn't related to computers in any single way. Having spent many of the last 20 years infront of a screen in one way or another I was betting on them telling me my eyesight was bad because of computers. If that was the case, I could have claimed some of the cost back from my employer. Nope, not computer related, therefore out of pocket cost.
You've got astigmatism as well. I basically means that the focal point in your eyes isn't where it would be with "normally" shaped eyes. The glasses help to correct the focal location.

I am both short-sighted and astigmatic, and I wear contact lenses all day without any issues. I've been using contact lenses for 8 years now and I must say that I cannot live without them, even in front of the PC.

I've been wearing glasses since grade school. When I went to get my drivers license at 16 I had 20/300 in both eyes. Sitting in front of a computer for hours at a time, I can't wear contacts...they dry up and fall out. but other than that I've never had a problem .
It's not my fault you suck.

I've got three pair - driving, reading and computer work :sigh: The last pair of driving glasses were bi-focals (quarter panel), but they really didn't work when reading, so I had to get a different pair. As for the reading / computer glasses, they have different focal lengths to help with eye strain. I end of leaving my computer glasses on while at work even when walking around the building - good thing most of the people here have different shapes so I can recognise them at a distance :-O

I though 20/20 was considered perfect. I am 20/20 in my left eye and 20/200 in the right. I do have a contact for the right but I rarely use it because the 20/200 eye sees the small font on computer screen better than the 20/20 eye...

Nope. 20/20 means you can see at 20 feet what a normal person can see at 20 feet. 20/40 means you can see at 20' what a normal person can see at 40. IMO the misconception of it being 'perfect' can largely be blamed on school 'vision tests', which only care about identifying people with poor vision to make sure they get the glasses they need. IF your vision is normal or superior is immaterial to the goal and consequently not tested. Combined with the average personnel quality in the education field the promulgation of the misconception is completely unsurprising.

AFAIK, it's normal / average. Not a problem in itself, just an indicator that things are deteriorating.

No. Just a contact lens every few days for a few hours or when I know I will be shooting pool or anything else that will require seeing strait. [EDIT]Edited twice looking for the unwell symbol but FF3 no longer gives the symbol names when I hover over the icon...[/EDIT]

I remember the first kid to get glasses in grade school. We all wanted to try them on and see how cool we looked with glasses. Everybody was jealous of him. then about 2 years later I had glasses and it wasn't so cool anymore. I'm a contacts wearer every day now. But I can also tell I'm getting older (30), cause I can't wear my contacts all day like I used to. They get dry on windy days or by about 9:00pm. Hogan

I wore glasses since 2nd grade. I had been tested at one point as 20/400 in my right eye and 20/600 in my left. My right eye had severe astigmatism and my left eye had "normal" astigmatism That all changed this past November with LASIK. Now I'm 20/20 in my left eye and about 20/25 in my right. Of course, this probably means that I'll need reading glasses by the time I'm 35, but whatever. Not needing glasses to see anything more than a foot in front of me is wonderful. :-D

Know the feeling! My wife wore glasses for > 20 years, then got laser treatment - hasn't looked back since (excuse pun) She still occasionally poes herself in the eye as she tries to push her non-existent glasses up! I, on the other hand, havd always had good vision until about the same time she got lasered - now I can't see a thiong without glasses, and my eyes are slowly deteriorating - and I can't afford laser treatment (in fact I don't think I'm elligable as theyr'e changing too fast). It's only in the last couple of years I discovered 'ctrl +' in browsers - and now I use it all the time. I'm a sad old bastard :(

getting old ... beats the alternative !!! At 43 I have 20/20 'normal vision' .. except when I get tired + exceptionally fine print / Bad light .. so I have +1 reading glasses if and when I have to .. If thats all your issues are you're doing very well !!! 'g'

So does that mean when I finally get laser-eye* treatment and don't have to wear glasses/contact-lenses I'll be getting younger? Woot! Chin up though Shog9 from outer space. I've had glasses since I was 10 and would happily kill for 20/20 :) * Sharks with frikin laser beams on their heads!

I've had it all my life. I am also short sighted, my eyesight is abysmal. I thought your eyes STOP changing as you get older ?
