Work Laptop Recommendations

.. can't wait for the quad core laptop anymore :^) I was hoping to get one beut seeing that Intel has still not released one I will have to settle for a dual core. Has anyone bought a new laptop recently they can recommend? It is mainly for development work (with VS2008) so 16" upwards is essential! I am also a fan of the left "Ctrl" button on the OUTSIDE, the "Fn" on the inside. (Yes, I know you can swap them in the BIOS but that is not the same! :-O ) Would like to hear your opinions ... F

I just bought a DELL Inspiron 1720, and it is great! And it fit the criterias you mention...

im busy saving for the ASUS G2 its a gaming laptop so its quite powerful...

I have VAIO Espresso Black with 13.3" screen.. It's quite good..

I just bought a DELL Inspiron 1720, and it is great! And it fit the criterias you mention...

How about an Acer 5624WSMi with external 24" monitor remoted onto a quad core Opteron server* with 16GB RAM? ;P * Not that far from the setup I'm using today (mine is a dual core Opteron with 5GB). Win2k8 x64 is virtually the ideal OS for development. :)

Dell Inspiron lacks docking capabilities, so it fails my needs. I use Dell Latitude D830 for work and it works for me. It has 15.4" screen though.

I bought an HP dv9000t 1.5 years ago, and I'm still very happy with it (the current models are probably better even): - 17 inch screen, 1680 x 1050 resolution. Nice, but no need to squint like 1900 x 2000. - 2 x 7200 rpm disks (don't settle for 5400 rpm). Use one for OS-es, and the other for data. - At the time 2 Gb mem, but upgraded to 3 Gb mem couple of months ago. - NVidia graphics card. Back then the ATI drivers were really crappy, not sure if they still are now. - Has seperate numeric key section on the right. I don't use them since I have a seperate keyboard anyway, but still nice. Building quality is pretty good, and I'm gonna try if it hangs in there till Vista's successor appears in 2009 or 2010 :).

I would suggest that you buy a Dell Vostro. It is one of the best Dell laptops, has docking capabilities, equivelant in design to Dell Inspiron, cheap, and lastly, since it is a business laptop it comes with better specs/discounts.

I quite like the Dell Vostro's but it seems none of them come with a 7200rpm SATA? .. I think 7200rpm is essential! Am I not looking in the right place?

Dell XPS 1730 with full spec. Beautiful screen resolution, lightning fast piece of kit. It's a big ol' box of a thing to lug around, but I recently moved to Zurich so I needed a desktop replacement as opposed to a truly portable laptop. It's the fastest machine I've ever used.

Usually you'll have a docking station in the office into which you plug a keyboard, mouse, network cable, power supply etc. Now when you arrive at the office you just take the notebook out of the bag, connect it to the docking station and away you go.
