Family Reunion
-
I live near Las Vegas and am enjoying a good chunk of my extended family in Vegas for a reunion. Even though I live here, like a lot of locals I don't have much occasion (or desire) to get to the strip, so when family comes into town, I get to play tourist with them which is its own fun. Where do you go for family reunions? And do you generally enjoy them? tolerate them? hate them? (the reunions I mean, not the family ;P )

Sometimes. More tolerant if there's plenty of

Dad's ranch for a massive BBQ where the flesh of many chickens, sheep and baby cows gets consumed with great relish. They're ok, I get along with almost all of my cousins (direct or removed), I hate it when the aunts and the grannies drown you with their kisses and turn your cheeks redder than a babboon's @$$ with pinches because they haven't seen you since lord knows when. Other than that, they're OK.

Mmmmmm, a massive BBQ at your dad's sounds pretty good, right about now :-D

Deaths and Marriages. I have a small family though. My girlfriend's Irish family is much, much bigger (her father has 13 siblings, mother has 8.)
cheers, Paul M. Watson.

Back when I was the most able bodied kid, my sister and I were the gophers at these events because all our other cousins were old enough to say no or too young to be able to do anything or simply guests (like my maternal cousins ). I used to hate the whole "setup and tear down" at these events but the food and games was more than fun :)

My youngest cousins are now old enough  We were at my brother's "wedding reception" (long story) yesterday and my aunt was bragging that my cousin is ready to go play college football (US football) at Pennsylvania this fall. She showed me a picture in the newspaper of him smashing this kid in a All-County High School football game last week, and it turns out this guy is going to be his teammate in college. At least my cousin's accomplishments changed the subject since I have been getting tired of talking about my car accident last month where I took a 300ft plunge over the mountainside, couldn't avoid a small boulder in time, knocked out the steering and went over the side.

I've always thought that the closest my branch of the family get to reunions are funerals - and I've not had an invite to one of them for a while. It's a shame really - we're a pretty big family with a rather colourful history[^] going all the way back to William Medecalfe de Dent in the 12th Century - but unfortunately my branch of it is somewhat fragmented and out of touch. It probably doesn't help that I have no contact with my relatives, though. :sigh:

Middle of last month on the way to work one afternoon. Nothing broken, had to climb up a 60 degree slope to get back to the highway with a bum shoulder.

We've never had a reunion. It's bad enough to have to get together for holidays, although it's somewhat less excruciatingly boring now that my cousin has two little kids for me to play with.

We usually meet at a restaurant, or directly at someone's home. I like the reunions, and generally enjoy them. However, political discussions tend to turn ugly in our family: My uncle and my mother are members of the city council, but for different parties: My mother is with the SPD (socially oriented), my uncle is with the FDP (economically oriented), which leads to a lot of friction. My other uncle is pretty convervative as well, and tends to drift more to the right wing in relation to the amount of alcohol he's had. At that point, I usually leave. My girlfriend is Turkish, so the family bonds are VERY tight. Her family is great, very open and tolerant. Also great as in "BIG". BIG! 1200 people on her father's funeral - and most of them were (direct or indirect) family (no big deal when there are at least 5 kids in every branch of the family. Impressive nontheless). I am a bit tense around that many people and tend to avoid most of the guests. I regret that, though, but I can't help it.
