Hackers take things apart with no intention of reassembly. Crackers take things apart with the intention to put it together differently (illegally).

I would say they are hackers (in this sense[^]. Esp. point 7: One who enjoys the intellectual challenge of creatively overcoming or circumventing limitations.

IronScheme - 1.0 alpha 4a out now (29 May 2008)I always use the term Hacker in the sense of 2600, or what is called "grey hat" hacking. We hack to understand and/or improve. In fact, IME, in order to have a successful hack, the item being hacked still needs to work afterwards! :) Homebrew hackers are good examples -- they hack in order to try to get their own software to run on a system. In order to do that, they need to understand pretty much everything about that system, and they cannot
brickifyit in the process. Crackers mess with things like protection systems in order to get around them, usually for nefarious purposes. Take software crackers for example -- they do not hack to understand the complete internal workings of your product, just the copy protection parts and how to disable them. Peace!-=- James
