Blew a phone interview with Microsoft. Sigh.. Ok, my friend (who was here) says I did fine. The interviewer said I did fine (course, he's not going to say "You blew it.") Maybe I'm too hard on myself. Maybe I care too much about the bloody outcome.

Hey, I blew a phone interview once, a Tech interview with the Tech Program Manager. But I had a previous interview with the Program Director early, so after I screwed the pooch on that second interview, I called the director, thanked him for taking the time and effort and briefly explained what happened (I'm not 'book smart' to where I can answer questions asked directly from some tech manual, which that Tech guy wanted, I gave more 'real world' answers and, well he didn't like that.). Well, I spent 3.5 years there as Tech Lead/Manager for the Southern District...never give up hope, but always follow up with the person whom you are working with for the positions, even just to say thanks...

Thanks :) I think I'm coming to the conclusion I suck at phone interviews. I've never obviously blown an in-person interview. Phone though... why the heck would someone expect reading code over the phone to go well?!

my biggest problem with phone interview is, my attention span is very short. I totally hate any thing with phone (phone interview, teleconference) I used to doze in my previous job every week in the status meeting were there were bunch of people on the phone. X|

Patty, chill man, so you *think* you blew the phone interview with MS, big deal. Its not the end of the world. Whether MS makes an offer or not is certainly not a reflection of how good of a person and an engineer you are :) And take it from an ex Microsoftie (they recruited me out of university after my internship), working there is seriously over-rated.

Whether MS makes an offer or not is certainly not a reflection of how good of a person and an engineer you are :) And take it from an ex Microsoftie (they recruited me out of university after my internship), working there is seriously over-rated.

Yeah :) It's not like I'm short on prospects. There have just always been a few companies I thought it would be incredible to work for and I never actually thought they'd express interest.

Pbbbbt. I haven't even begun. Two phone interviews came out of 4-6 hours of work. But, you're probably right that some relaxation is in order ;)

Lambaste... I haven't heard that word since I left Canada. My grandmother used to threaten my cousins and me with a proper caning like back in her day if we didn't quit our antics :laugh: Good times :) Have to make the crowds laugh man ;)

Well, yeah, but from my experience and recently bastard cynical view of life, small innovative companies are THE place to be. Pay might not be so hot but the work will certainly be extremely interesting.

This reminds me how much exactly I hate some stupid tests, with questions like: “Please provide the exact names of all classes from MFC, involved in the inter-process communication and tread synchronization”. WTF?!? You do not need from a programmer you idiots; you’re need from a librarian!
The narrow specialist in the broad sense of the word is a complete idiot in the narrow sense of the word.

It is not end of the world. I've blown so more interviews than I care to remember. Behind every blown opportunity I learned many lessons and I became better person. We learn more by loosing than winning. Look on the bright side of your life. :rose:

I've come to the conclusion not to make conclusions. I've had phone interviews go great and I never heard another thing, and those I thought I blew and I got a second round.

The more I reflect on the phone interviews, the more I pretty much think the same thing. Once the emotions subside, I decide that there's simply no way for me to objectively evaluate how I did (aside from my own standards) or predict a potential outcome. If one of them calls me back, I'll plotz!

I actually interviewed a guy who's CV stated (carefully worded) he had worked for MS in the UK (I was working there some years ago) who we held the position open for 2 days so we could interview him, an excellent CV, a total idiot when inteviewed. So he either lied on his CV or worked as the cleaner at the offices. There used to be real value in having MS on the CV, not so sure these days. And ask ANY contractor if they have blown a phone interview :^) You'll get over it and with prospects it will not even impact your lifestyle.
