Nope. And they're not mammals. Popular misconception that they're permanently high - actually they're slow because there's so little nutritional value in the gum leaves they eat. I thought Elephants eat rotting fruit and got drunk? (or was that just some wierd dream I had)

Yes they are. Bear young that cannot fend for themselves, ride around in a pouch and drink Koala produced milk. Sounds like a mammal to me.

A platypus is a monotreme... An egg-laying mammal...

Anyone who cares if they are mammal or not?

:) us who are interested in animals are I guess!
hehe.. well makes sense hey! But I misspelled, I was meaning "Anyway why do you care if it's a mammal or not?" Some times you could read discussion where people express strong feeling such as X is a Y or not. Such as, for exemple, wether Tomatoe are Fruit or not. And I can't help but be puzzled: who cares? More importantly what does it matter? i.e. what does it change? I mean fruit or not I'm still going to eat it the same way and people are going to cultivate it the same way and biology researcher are still going to do the research the same way. This is just a definition for its own sake and without real value, I see no value in fighting over it.... (PS: I Know about the hanging from a tree thing! that might be marginally helpful to remind it, but to just insist on the fruit word is not) Same for the mammal thing, if you ask me.... Disclaimer: I am not intending to be rude, just sharing my .... ununderstanding.

I guess if it's your passion or not, you care. I remember in college my biology professor loved botany and really focused on what was fruit versus flower, etc. How many times in the forums have we seen someone yell about VB6 not being the same as VB.NET? It's because we're passionate about programming. People who love English will correct you on good vs. well. Does it matter? No. However, because they love the language they want you to appreciate it and correct you on it. I am passionate about animals so if someone says something wrong, I try to correct them. Not to show them they are wrong, but I want to share my understanding with another and hope they gain the interest that I have. That's my two-cents worth! :)

The "tomatoes are/are not fruit" is an esoteric distinction. Mistaking a koala for a non-mammal is so patently wrong that it is laughable. I don't care whether it's a mammal or not, but I do care when I'm listening or reading to someone's opinions whether that person is massively ill-informed, as it impacts the seriousness with which I ponder their thoughts. Moral? "When one is not sure whether they are foolish or wise, one should remain silent lest, when they speak, they remove all doubt."
