So, let me explain my part. Someone says cricket is a violent game. You ask why. I take a guess at it. You call it bollocks. I say yes, cricket is bollocks (and there's a wink icon, to give you a hint that it is merely a humorous play on words). But then you start:

I am proving it over and over that this country of mine too can produce programmers, who will stand amongst the best. 4) Most importantly, what I feel honored about, is that I was awarded as a CP MVP. That was the happiest day in my life. There's no nomination, there's no recommendation. It is a true selection process and it's my best achievement. I am probably the only one living in India who is a CP MVP? Can you name another one, please?

I think you are all of those things you say you are and rightly take pride in. The U.S. would be glad, and lucky, to have someone like you emigrate. But I think you need to accept his explanation that he was joking, just as he must accept yours. By the way. I think Cricket is bollocks ;P

I'm glad you explained your intention. It really didn't come across that way. It happens, of course, and, as you say, it's advisable to mark any internet humor clearly, and let the reader catch the deadpan quality. Or, failing that, be ready with an apology if someone is hurt unintentionally.

I agree with Oakman. There is so much mud slinging in the SB that you have to be very clear if you are joking. When I first read what you said, I figured you were joking, but you have to be clear to the recipient. I'm sure if English isn't a first language that makes it even harder. I've seen people use the joke icon and people still take it the wrong way. I think we need to start using joke or sarcasm tags. Those we all seem to get! :) And if you read through Rajesh's post you will see that he too is very accomplished and I'm glad he's part of our CP community.

Calling someone a shame to his nation doesn't look like the best humor to me. I usually have a good sense of humor, but that didn't sound like a deadpan. However, with all due respect, that joke sucked.

Seriously, I wouldn't have even replied to him if I even had remotely felt that it could be a joke. It took it way too seriously for reasons obvious. BTW, what do you think about cricket? :)

I have only watched cricket when I spent time in Australia. Since I did not grow up with it, it's kind of a novelty and I find it kind of fun to watch for awhile. I get bored with most sports though after an hour or so. I have an Australia cricket shirt from the late 1990's and got my hubby a small bat and wicket (sp?)
