i am looking into a new monitor(s). i do not have the budget to make a mistake and change my mind the problem i have with dual screens is sometimes if the code line is long enough it gets by split the screen edges - 20 inches (50 centimeters) each screen. i want to go widescreen, like 24 (61 cm) inches, 27 inches (69 cm), or 32 inches(81 cm) so the question...how many people use/prefer wide screen to dual monitors?

My laptop is a 17" Wide Screen and it is amazing (it has a very high resolution. I can barely get a line of code to wrap on a full screen .net APP with it. Don't forget you want a Wide Screen monitor not television. The resolutions are different.

There are utilities such as Ultramon (http://www.realtimesoft.com/ultramon/[^]) that allow you to treat each monitor separately, so you don't end up with one humongously wide desktop. BTW, another Ultramon advantage is that you get a taskbar on each monitor, which shows only the apps on that monitor. Highly recommended.

      Best wishes, Hans

Why not dual wide-screens? The best of both worlds!

:( i wish. i cannot bring myself to spend $800 just on the monitors. 2 dual screens = approx $400 or 1 widescreen lcd HDMI = $400

I prefer dual wide screen monitors. Why choose between the two? I've got a 24" in the middle and a 22" on the right side. I'm still toying with another 22" on the left side - it just feels like something's missing :-D Cheers, Drew.

It's US$800 for the best of the best of wide-screen. But you can get 2 good quality wide-screen monitors for less than that.

Well, if you are stuck on Acer, then no, but I took a quick look at Dell and they have a 24" WS for $379. I know that's only $10 less, so you may not care either way. If you are hellbent on 24" with HDMI, then that Acer is probably the one to go with. If you dropped your search down to 22", your prices drop considerably as well. At least with this monitor, you could wall mount it and hook up your TV to it too. Good luck

I tried dual monitors and never adjusted to it. I still used that setup occasionally when debugging UIs in applications, but generally kept the second monitor shut off. For non-gaming computer use, the Dell 2007WFP has been marvelous. Before you buy, look up S-IPS and educate yourself first--see thread below for my adventures.

Try to keep your lines short enough to not wrap when printed in a legible font. For me, that's 112 characters; which I can see even on a 17" screen.

I find wide screens aesthetically irritating, but can't say anything technically bad about them. A single wide screen may be a problem with some programs that assume a "standard" aspect ratio, though I haven't seen anyone lately. I find dual 4:3 monitors together with Ultramon far more flexible to use than a single one, no matter what it's size. It mostly boils down on simple maximizing one app on one monitor and depends a lot on how I manage my desktop windows. So I prefer dual 4:3, but besides some window pushery that's completely a matter of taste. If my budget would be similarily tight, I'd go for a single good monitor, though.

What's wrong with both? I regularly use two or more widescreen monitors on the same machine - even with a 24" widescreen (1920 x 1200), a second monitor is handy. BTW if you haven't not got a second monitor port on your machine I can highly recommend DisplayLink[^] USB adaptors - we've been using one here since April, and so far it's handled everything (VGA or DVI) we've thrown at it. Who says you can't have three monitors on a laptop....? ;)

                                > Why not dual wide-screens? The best of both worlds! Since 2 days ago, I've gone triple widescreen, all in portrait mode--I get over 110 lines of code vertically. :-) VS has plenty of room to show two source files side-by-side (VS main window stretched across two monitors), and the third for floating windows, Explorer, Outlook, IE, etc. Before the third widescreen, I had both in landscape mode. One monitor is still wide enough for two source files side-by-side, and the other is for "everything else".
