Isn't it amazing that the leader of the "Democrats" in the House would refuse to allow a democratic resolution, even when her party holds a majority of the seats...

Variations of this happen all the time in Illinois, Cook County and Chicago politics which are ALL dominated by Democrats. X|

Someone asked her that a year ago and she still hasn't finished spewing rhetoric at them. (and yes I believe she is against offshore drilling)
I thought she was against it. I have childhood memories of finding oil tar balls on southern California beaches all the time. It was always covered up as "naturally occurring oil oozing from the seabed." Sure. It was from the offshore oil rigs. I didn't really care, just a minor inconvenience when trying to get them off the bottom of my feet, but nothing to make a big ruckus over.

Here's what she said, in a book she wrote, just before she took office; "Bills should generally come to the floor under a procedure that allows open, full, fair debate consisting of full amendment process that grants the Minority the right to offer its alternatives." Apparently she's changed her mind. . . .

She must have written it when she was in the minority. Nothing corrupts like power.

This translation has been taken to heart by Ms. Nancy Pelosi the grandmotherly Speaker of the House of Representatives who, on Friday, refused to allow the House to vote on off-shore drilling but sent everyone home for a five week vacation (their second of the summer.) Ms. Pelosi flew home in her jumbo jet (paid for by taxpayers) that comes close to rivaling Air Force One in fixtures, but usually carries a lot fewer people and even less members of the government. Ms. Pelosi is, as we all know, a strong supporter of energy conservation. But before she went home, she appeared on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos." Mr. Stephanopoulos is not known for his conservative viewpoint, but the look on his face as the esteemed Speaker answered each variation of his simple question: "Why won't you permit a straight up or down vote on offshore drilling?" with wilder and wilder non sequiturs, was priceless. For those of you who regret having missed Ms. Pelosi's performance (think of Aunt Bea in the Andy Griffith Show) you can watch it for yourself. It's long, but the best part is in the first 15 minutes of the video. Sample: GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS, HOST: You've been getting a lot of heat for not allowing a straight up or down vote expanding drilling off the coasts of the United States. Why won't you permit a straight up or down vote? NANCY PELOSI, SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE: What we have presented are options that will really make a difference at the pump. Free our oil, Mr. President. We're sitting on 700 million barrels of oil. That would have an immediate effect in ten days. What our colleagues are talking about is something that won't have an effect for ten years and it will be 2 cents at the time. If they want to present something that's part of an energy package, we're talking about something. But to single shoot on something that won't work and mislead the American people as to thinking it's going to reduce the price at the pump, I'm just not going to be a part of it. And apparently, none of our elected representatives will be part of it either, thanks to her. Personally, I think she is one of the top reasons for following Stan's lead and taking a close look at who represents you (if you are an American) in Congress and then to back the one you can respect.

Your response is as much on the mark as Ms. Pelosi's answers were. You are correct in that I don't usually go to slashdot to be told what to think. I like to believe I make up my own mind about things, even when my opinions are not popular. I also respect the regs in this forum because most of them also have come to their own opinions about things instead of drinking slashdot's koolaid or politico's koolaid or anybody else's koolaid for that matter. That's why, while I commented on what I had seen personally, I also provided a link to the video of the broadcast, and quoted it extensively. (I've got the transcript) You are, or anyone else here is, at liberty to examine my source material and come to your/their own conclusions. Of course, the beauty of the Internet is that you are also free to yammer on as if you had a brain while doing nothing but linking to the thoughts of other people.

Clearly you're not talking about yourself. Deliberate distortion of another's statements is generally practiced only by children and politicians, and accrues you no respect.

Well, you aren't wrong again. You haven't given me any reason to respect you. Certainly, if the post I am replying to is representative of your puerile behavior, it's unlikely that you will grow in my estimation. I prefer talking to grownups.

Perhaps if you had linked to the original subject matter rather than to pontificators eager to tell us what to think, it might have sparked more interest. You and Bulg certainly have different tastes in which commentors you want us to read, but ultimately the goal you two seem to share appears to be to deliver neatly (more or less) packaged responses to the world, rather than linking to the facts - almost as if you don't want anyone thinking outside of your box. But that couldn't be it -- could it?
