My girlfriends birthday is coming up in less than a month. I can think of several places that would make for a great dinner (thank you minneapolis) however i'm completely clueless about what else to do. I want to make it amazing... (i'm competing with her b-day from 2 years ago where she went hang-gliding in New Zealand) any ideas on once in a lifetime opportunites that she'll remember forever? :)

I was going to suggest that, but it is dangerous, and something going wrong could make it a very unpleasant affair.

First time skydivers is tandem only I believe, and beyond that when you're finally allowed to solo, you need to have so many successful jumps where your parachute gets automatically deployed after a few seconds. Only after you've forked over a ton of cash (thousands of pounds) and done relatively piddly jumps are you allowed to free-fall solo. All very safe.

Here in SA your first ten jumps are normally static line, i.e. the auto-deployment scenario, after a day's training. Tandem jumps require much less training, but do nothing to further your accreditation. The static line jumps cost about R200 each back in 2003. We also have an Accelerated Free Fall track, in which your very first jump is free fall but assisted by two trainers at your sides. It only takes one or two more jumps to reach solo free fall, but that cost about R1000 per jump in 2003, and required several jumps.

There're somewhat cheaper options that would fit your budget if you were only a little short for a VG ticket. For a few grand a ticket there're companies in Florida and Nevada that will fly passengers in zero g parabolas for brief freefall experiences. For $30k there's a company in Russia that'll fly you high enough in a MIG-31 to see the curvature of the Earth.

Well you could charter a Sea Plane to take you and her to a remote lake 100's of miles from no where and spend the weekend camping and picnicking in quiet serenity. Of course Murphy's law would suggest that should you do this, some other moron will have the exact same idea and make his camp immediately adjacent to yours.

Ask her to marry you. She’ll remember this.

And lets not forget that for a meager $10m you can go to orbit ...
