My girlfriends birthday is coming up in less than a month. I can think of several places that would make for a great dinner (thank you minneapolis) however i'm completely clueless about what else to do. I want to make it amazing... (i'm competing with her b-day from 2 years ago where she went hang-gliding in New Zealand) any ideas on once in a lifetime opportunites that she'll remember forever? :)

Ask her to marry you. She’ll remember this.

There're somewhat cheaper options that would fit your budget if you were only a little short for a VG ticket. For a few grand a ticket there're companies in Florida and Nevada that will fly passengers in zero g parabolas for brief freefall experiences. For $30k there's a company in Russia that'll fly you high enough in a MIG-31 to see the curvature of the Earth.

I only want to raise the bar... because the bar was set by her last bf, and its all she could talk about for a while

And you should learn something from that. Look at what he got eventually, you don't want she talk about what you did with the next bf ... ;P

Why do you feel compelled to "compete" with your last bday gift to her and with a bday gift from her old boyfriend? I don't think too highly of her if she's making you feel like you have to compete with a gift an ex-boyfriend gave to her! What if next year, circumstances have it where you temporarilly have no money to spend on frivolity? Would she still love you? Still want to be your girlfriend? Does she love you for you or for what you can give her and do for her? Hey maybe you don't care, and maybe you get off on being the big guy throwing around money impressing people. But there just seems a lot wrong with the situation here where you are trying to top things. Obviously just my opinion. I've always been the type of female to look through all of the garbage to get to what the person is like. I wish you luck with her birthday and with the relationship.

IMO, it's probably a good idea to lower the bar, and just be what you can be. If she's only interested in what you can give her and not interested in you alone, then she'll leave you for someone else.

Be thoughtful and personal rather than trying to be bigger and better. For my girlfriends first birthday after we got together I got her a signed & framed pic of her favourite musician. He's not a particularly popular artist, so took a bit of tracking down, but didn't cost too much. I then took the trouble to get it framed along with the CD & cover artwork that the pic was from. Total cost was under £100, but she cried when she opened it, and she's still got it up on the wall in her study. She still proudly tells people about it any time he is mentioned. Think of something personal to her. Think about what you know about her and the things she likes, then make something special out of that.

If you have to "compete" with a previous birthday....then maybe you should consider a different gf. And along those lines...you want REALLY memorable? break up with her. She'll remember that forever. Seriously, rent/buy her favorite movie and take her out to a nice dinner. Follow that up back at your/her place with a night thats all about her. do whatever she wants. Just think ahead and make sure you have prepared some of the things that she might request which aren't usually possible spontaneously. That's the stuff that will really impress her.

Yeah but Steven just fell short of virgin galactic, so my offerings should be easily within his budget, while a soyuez flight would be far beyond it. Also IIRC the ticket's $20m+, for just the flight and room, Nasa's planning to bill the next person going $350k for email. :wtf:

Ah, so you're actually competing against an old BF...wow! First suggestion is stop competing and just be yourself. Do something from the heart. Cook her a really nice meal, nothing extravagant, just something really nice. Or maybe a trip to New York to see a Broadway show or something. Greatest thing I ever got my wife was a day at the Spa (already mentioned). Let them pamper her all day, and follow that up with a nice home cooked meal... There's a good reason he's an EX, and if she's with you because of who YOU are, then just be YOU.

Good points there. Obviously something didn't go right with the ex, or the guy wouldn't be an ex.

:laugh::laugh: Good one. They are pretty expensive places to go to.
