I am considering buying a new one, any recommendations ?, I want to know more about if there is a problem of having 5400 rpm instead of 7200 for the harddisk? also I want to buy a 17' one, but its over the budget, so may be I will buy 15.4 one, does it make a big difference in working with it ? and what are the brand that I should buy from ? thanks in advance.

my suggestion is to go to outlet.dell.com and select a laptop from there. you can get a dual core 3ghz laptop with 4gb ram, 180gb hd @ 7200 rpm, with a high res 15.4 screen for less than $1500. if you need less hardware, you could pick one up for just over a grand. i picked up two latitude d830 with XP Pro and the specs above from there and have had no issues. I also know many people who only buy from the dell outlet store and have had no issues. generally, you'll save $300-$500 on there.

When buying laptops the question is not really about HDD (speed) performance or screen real estate, rather it is more about "how long do I want the battery to last?" & " how LITTLE screen estate can I live with?" If you want the beast to be a desktop / dev server replacement (such as the machine I am using now) then you will go for the best (MAX) combination of HDD size & screen size (Compaq Presario with 2Gb Ram - runs VS 2008 quite nicely even though it's nearly now 4yrs old). I only need to port this to client meetings once or twice a month (it weighs ~3.5 Kg). If portability is a more serious requirement then I would advise a "cheap" laptop & a 3G broadband USB dongle so that you can RDP onto your static dev. environment and let this take the CPU / RAM strain. Cheers, J.

just a note... Dell is currently having serious battery supply issues. as in: there aren't enough batteries out there to meet the demand. so, the laptop i ordered three weeks ago keeps getting delayed until Dell can find a battery to stick in it. so, maybe off-the-shelf is a better way to go, these days.

This is the problem, I think I want 17 but the one only here in egypt is 12000EGP, but the 15.4 with nearly all the same specs is 7500EGP :wtf: So this is the problem:^) And yes I want a desktop replacement.

ASUS have also recently had very high profile battery supply issues. Presumably this is an industry-wide problem based on long-term metal commodity supply issues.

OK - postings are starting to overlap - however I will try to make sense  IF you can live with a foreign power supply (I lived and worked in Brasil for months with no problems using voltage converters - BTW I'm from UK [240v @ 50Hz] - Brasil = [Some Volts Sometimes @ "Whenever they can get it tohether" Hz]) then you should be able to purchase any machine you like and power it off a custom piece of power kit (well out of warranty obviously). If you can get a suitable power converter you might be well advised to take a "holiday" in Spain and bring a new machine back with you. I've just had a look at the currency conversion rates - you might want to wait 6 months - looks like our curriencies might be in for a bit of a "readjustment"... :-D

That'll be the reason then - I do hear that 75% of all the world's socks are now made in one town in China - or is this just full-on "reds under the bed" scare-mongering?

I may consider getting one from us, but was the power conversion thing annoying ?

Depends on how often you have to move it :) As long as it is relatively easy to plug in & move it's not really a hassle :)

For Egypt based purchase I cannot make a recommendation - I do not know what is available locally. Dell (I spit as I say the name) have a good reputation in some territories. Personally I refuse to buy their machines (of any type - though I'm probably biased - the company I used to work for standardised on Compaq [for support reasons] - so got used to having "3 year hand-hold" type support for everything) - however I do hear that Dell worldwide support is quite good these days. However the LTD that I currently work for buys their exec. type laptops from Sony (let's face it - they're SH*T). HP OR Compaq (yes - I Know it's the same!!!) would be my preferrence.

the lenovo t6xp series is the best there is IMO. You definitely need a 7200 spin drive (makes a huge difference).
