I didn't realize they supported subversion now, though it looks like Assembla has everything I was looking for, so I'll look into it if Assembla doesn't pan out.

Yeah, I realize I'm putting my trust in someone not to access something I don't want accessed. It's basically the same issue you run into hosting a commercial web application with a hosting company. They have physical control of your server and can steal any data off of it they want. I think the chances of that kind of thing going on with the stuff I'm thinking of are way smaller then me fat fingering something and realizing all my backups are crap managing it myself.

I'd like to get an offsite host for my subversion repository for private projects, not open source. Does anyone have any recommendations for a host with a decent price.
If it's at *all* important to you I recommend you rent a server from ServerBeach.com and run it yourself. If you're cheap or don't care or are half-assed about these things then there are plenty of free services mentioned here every month or so when someone asks this exact same question.

Out of interest, why do you want to host source code offsite? Here, source code is, in essence, our only asset, and we would *never* put it on some server "out there" on the big nasty internet.
We *mirror* our subversion repository offsite a thousand miles away on a very secure self managed server. It is our only asset and to trust our backup system entirely or that our offices won't burn down is criminally negligent.

I'm not saying off site backups aren't a good idea, but do you need to mirror the repostitory? Surely an encrypted backup file copied to the remote server would give the same level of data protection, without the risks of someone reading / copying your code?

Just finished reading one of the articles on the blog there, I don't think size worries them, they seem to be of the opinion that large teams are less productive, go figure. So the bigger the team the less they need to do!

Yes I absolutely do need a mirror because stuff can go wrong at any time. Whenever I do a commit I want to know that it's safe off my work station both locally and remotely. I might commit as often as every few minutes if I'm working on something very tricky and I don't think it's safe to wait for some nightly backup process to handle it. I used to be an independant network tech on call to many large businesses and organisations and I've seen every form of disaster you can imagine so I have good reasons for playing it safe. Security is a non-issue entirely, you worry far too much about it. If you were managing your *own* server from a place like serverbeach then you have full control over security. Ours is secured first and foremost by the fact that the firewall on the remote server is only open to our local office IP address. I would never under any circumstances use one of those shared free or cheap repository services because the code is just too important to trust to that but a self managed server that you have full control over is entirely different.
