you can use it in command line to pause the output... also, a Win+Pause opens the "System Properties" dialog.

I assume you can use it to pause any useless Windows system processes..? (winlogon.exe and explorer.exe to name a few). Regards, --Perspx

It's used for Pause output. For example when your machine starts you can use to pause and read bios messages. Oh yeah and the bathroom thing too ;)

You can only use that key when you're working in an office. When you're about to go on a break, you hit that key. When you come back, you hit it again. One of your corporate servers monitors these keystrokes and is used to verify your activity at work.

In my experience explorer.exe is quite capable of pausing itself without the need for any user intervention.

As the others have said it's a holdover from the olden days. I remapped it to toggle number pad mode on my laptop-like keyboard because I've remapped the numlock key to be the Home key. Actually I've remapped pretty much all the control type keys in a very geeky manner based on analyzing which keys I use most and where they are on the keyboard. When someone else tries to use my keyboard they tend to give up in frustration pretty quickly.

you press Pause if you want to close your eyes for a quick breather, of course it is probably linked to your boss so he can come in and yell at you for sleeping on the job.... You can press Break if you want a coffee or smoking break.... ironically it too is linked to your boss so that he can come in and yell at you for not working.... so.... not surprisingly, no one uses it anymore. of course, if you join a theatrical forum you can still offer someone good luck by telling them to [break] a leg. :)

Sadly I never learned the Dvorak layout and it hasn't really caught on leaving the improbable situation that many millions of people are typing on a layout designed *specifically* with the sole purpose of slowing down the typist. Hopefully the keyboard is destined for the dustbin of history sooner than later.

Legacy from the days of DOS. Pause would pause the output to the console window (and still does) and Break would be like a Ctrl-C, which it still does in a console window. Marc

That sounds like an antiquated system. Most companies these days use motion sensing webcams and Bobs.

I use control-break to break builds in Visual Studio. :)

Sadly I never learned the Dvorak layout and it hasn't really caught on leaving the improbable situation that many millions of people are typing on a layout designed *specifically* with the sole purpose of slowing down the typist. Hopefully the keyboard is destined for the dustbin of history sooner than later.

I bought myself a DAS Keyboard. Its "innovative" character layout allows me to use qwerty or dvorak with equal ease. I occasionally have a go at learning dvorak in ktouch but i can't say i've got anywhere with it yet.
