Moving to Windows XP 64-bit

After my tribulations dealing with installing Linux, I've decided to a) build a new machine, and b) install XP 64-bit. It looks like the on-board NIC and sound on my selected motherboard both have 64-bit drivers, as do both of my printers. If I run across any software that doesn't work in a 64-bit OS, I'll just install the 32-bit XP Pro in a virtual machine (that should work, right?). Is there anything else I should research that isn't immediately obvious?

However he did have a lot of problems with XP64 one such problem was the clipboard had a 30 second to 1 minute delay between copy and paste operations in all applications in the 64 bit OS. This was highly annoying to him and me since he wanted me to fix that. Also for his user account 64 bit IE would load when he pressed the 32 bit version so he could not use windows update nor could he install updates from the update icon in the tray. Other than that we had to use a printer driver from a different manufacturer since the there was no SHARP AR337 driver.

When AMD designed the 64 bit extension to x86 they removed the ability to execute 16 bit apps while the os was in 64 bit mode.

Although MS Virtual PC and Server only surface one core in the guest OS. This may or may not be a problem. I prefer to keep an old machine on the network and use Remote Desktop.

I have been running Vista 64bit for about half a year now. I have had almost no problems at all. I have had problems with audio drivers for my Creative sound card, but that's about it. I would really chose Vista 64 instead of XP 64 as the compatibility is much better and the WoW64 layer is smoother and the security is also better. To know which edition to chose (32bit or 64bit, Vista or XP) you really need to look at what hardware you will be using. I am a very new system, I have all the latest version most programs I use (which makes them Vista compatible). Most programs have update for Vista. My hardware is as follow ASUS Formula II (Nvidia 780i chipdset) 8GB memory Q9450 Creative SB X-Fi Nvidia 9800GTx And I run only newer software.

Well, Vista64 isn't an option because - well - it's Vista. I don't care how much smoother things might be, Vista sucks big hairy donkey testicles, and I ain't using' it.

Could you be more specific as to why Vista sucks and perhaps we could help you resolve those issues. Because you will really have a much smoother ride doing 64 bit computing in Vista than XP, take it from me I have done both.
