Metallica: The Day That Never Comes
-
I couldn't find any prior discussion on this, and I know there are metal fans here, so I thought I'd ask: What are your thoughts on the new Metallica single? It came out last Thursday (I think). If you haven't heard it yet, try not to judge it on the amazingly craptastic 8k realaudio streaming "high quality" youtube garbage. That makes it sound like it was recorded through a phone. Anyway, I like it... it's 8 minutes long, and clearly modeled after the old Fade To Black/Sanitarium/One mold. Though something horrible has happened to James' vocals since those days, the guitar riffs are blistering, Kirk's solos are back, and Lars' snare actually sounds like a snare. The heavier portion of the song gives me great hope for the other songs on the CD. Some may not be able to get past whatever Hetfield is trying to do with his voice, but to me Metallica has always been about the guitars and this song brings it. I gotta say I'm looking forward to September 12.

Wow it sounds pretty damn good; to me the intro riff reminds me a bit of Nothing Else Matters.. or is that just me? And James's vocals sound a bit different, but they're not too bad :) I can definitely see some influences from their older albums (Master of Puppets, Black Album, ...And Justice for All etc) and I like it. Hopefully the new album won't be a let down like St. Anger though, but as you say, it looks promising :) Regards, --Perspx

Personally, I can't stand it. Each individual riff sounds great, but then it's all kind of mashed together and incoherent as a whole. I also couldn't get over Hetfield's voice, and how the end of practically every line ends like this "But the sunshine never comes_ZZZAAA_". It's OK every once in a while, but get's old when it's at the end of practically every line.

he's always done that. it's a running joke in my house: whenever we hear a Metallica song, we sing every line like that.

I don't think the album with awesome from start to finish but I think there will be some good songs mixed in there making it worth buying which is something I can't say for St. Anger.

I actually think St. Anger is Ok if you mix it in with other stuff, and don't listen to it as an album. It's certainly on the bottom half of their catalog, but it's not much worse than (Re)Load.

Sounds a little bit overproduced to me - I come from the Master of Puppets/Justice for All generation of Metallica and I find this a bit tame and too much mixed into one song. I was trying to work out if it was like Queensryche or even Marillion in parts. It's like three songs in one, I would have preferred it if they had stuck with one theme. There's even some of the machine gun like 'One' base line it and in parts it sounds too much like Maiden. Having slagged off the single I still think they are absolutely brilliant musicians :)

I think his voice sounds like a meld of load/re-load and st. anger. The music is clearly old school Metallica, and not the fake stuff they produced on st. anger. I kind of liked it.

I'm liking it - it's like ...And Justice For All, which I always liked, despite the excessive top-end in the mix. However, while Metallica have produced stuff like Load and St Anger, bands like Isis, Machine Head, Boris, Mastodon, Pelican and Om have changed my tastes. It sounds a bit old-fashioned, more rock than metal.

I agree with that. Bob Rock convinced Hetfield he could sing on the Black Album and he's gone downhill since. He was too immature and squeeky on Kill 'Em All and Lightning, perfect on Puppets and Justice, still pretty good on the black album, but seriously flawed since then.

It's okay, vocals a bit "off" for me, but overall not bad...but I'd rather be playing the Metallica Guitar Hero on my WII...

Is that official? Any release date? I know they're releasing the entirety of Death Magnetic for Guitar Hero III on the same day the CD comes out, and I thought maybe that would be the extent of Metallica's Guitar Hero rumors.

I think it's the same release. I haven't heard of a pure Metallica GH, but I did hear GH3 will be mostly Metallica...romurs of course, but soon to find outas the release date is Sept 12th I believe. I'll see what I can dig up, but wouldn't it be SOMETHING to have a GH with ALL the New and Old Metallica? :omg: :omg:
