No, not what lots of you are thinking ;P Yesterday I had SKY HD installed (UK satellite) and unplugged the Virigin Media cable box. Finally rid of that piece of £"$%^^%*^$($ X| REAL HD (not HD MPEG2) and decent SD, none of that rubbish SD that VM transmit at what I'm pretty certain is about 60% of the bitrate needed. *Gentle sigh* All I need now is one of these[^] :-D

They have gone live with HD in South Africa too now, one channel only for now, but the decoder (HD PVR) is not too expensive (R2500) and has the same month cost as the SD PVR unit (you can also hookup the old one with the new one to give you 3 viewing and 3 recording at the same time).

xacc.ide - now with TabsToSpaces support
        IronScheme - 1.0 alpha 4a out now (29 May 2008)

I got a virgin box for free a couple of months ago, because I refused to pay for cable on the grounds that the amount of tv I watch isn't worth the amount I pay for the license let alone cable prices on top. I hate the way when you watch something the picture ghosts all the time until the adverts come on and then all of a sudden you have a crystal clear reception until the program resumes. I think I'm being ripped off.

Reduced bitrates can do things like this. It's one of the tricks to deal with their bandwidth problems - satellite like Sky have about 8.8Gb/s total system bandwidth, Virgin have about 4.8Gb/s.
