Definitely Ghost in the Shell SAC (stand alone complex), add to that Princess Mononoke, Ninja Scrolls, Fist of the North Star (an older one and a classic, you might not like it too much). I like Naruto and Bleach as well, but I've been reading the Manga and watching some of their episodes (the ones that aren't fillers) since their inception almost. I can also suggest Blade of the immortal (this one is brilliant). What do you like? Samurai/Ninja, futuristic, demons... there are so many to choose from... :)

I purposely did not tell you not to limit my choices. :) I don't really have a preference. I watched some GitS SAC and I think I saw Princess Mononoke. How about something light and funny?

So, I like anime a lot, just hadn't many opportunities to grab it. Besides what was shown at our TV (like Slayers) I watched Ghost in the Shell, Appleseed (marvelous!) and Full Metal Alchemist last year. I just started watching Ergo Proxy today. Can you suggest some good anime to watch? Either series or feature-length is fine as long as the story is interesting and it's drawn nicely. :)

Yeah, I watched a few of their movies (last one was Tales from Earthsea which I rented last year). I definitely watched more anime than I remember, only when I look at some titles it comes back to me. ;)

The second one comes up all the time whenever I do a search on anime, I guess I should see it for myself then.

You sound like a sensible chap, so watch more Studio Ghibli stuff. If I could afford it (which I can) I'd buy their entire back catalogue (which I have) :)

Apart from the ones already mentioned, I also liked Perfect Blue which is a psychological thriller. I read somewhere it was supposed to be a live action film, but was made into an anime due to budget constraints. I'm just about to watch Serial Experiments Lain, Elfen Lied and Nausicaa Valley of the Wind - all highly rated on IMDB. I know that it's not the same as personal recommendations, but this[^] might help.

I didn't like the Earthsea, though. :-D It bored me. Though Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke and Howl's Moving Castle were good, although I now barely remember them. I don't buy movies because I mostly watch them only once, I don't like paying a price worth of 1.5 book for 5 20min episodes on a DVD, it's too expensive for me.

Well, I guess somebody had to watch the movies and write the reviews, so unless they were paid for particular ratings... ;) This site looks like user reviews, so thanks.

Cowboy Bebop shouldn't be missed. Seriously good TV. I played the opening theme (Tank!) as the exit music at my wedding. Trigun was also pretty good.

You're right. These facts that you've laid out totally contradict the wild ramblings that I pulled off the back of cornflakes packets.

Hellsing is one of my favorites. The series is decent, but the OVA's are turning out great.
