Consuming large volumes of ethanol while throwing pointy objects at a remote round board on the wall works well. Whacking a white ball with a stick in apparently random directions which sometimes results in multi-colored balls falling into randdom pockets attached to the side of a felt-covered table also relieves stress. But you can't beat kicking the daylights out of large red belt on a padded floor for sheer relaxation. Sometimes they kick back, though; gotta watch your back. On weekends I like to sit on the porch watching the doves fight over the feed I put out for them, while decorating the pigeons who dare to intrude with colorful bits of plastic attached to 5" hardened wire spikes and propelled by compressed air. When I run out of pigeons - they do eventually learn - I like to play with steel, cutting and grinding, welding and grinding some more, to make things that would probably be cheaper to buy. But it is far less satisfying to buy than to make it myself, and that has a regenerative power in itself. When the power is out and I can't play with power tools, putzing around in the yard, tending the flowers and grading the yard with a rake is extraordinarily relaxing, and it wears me out enough to sleep deeply. But then, I'm not a programmer; I'm an engineer who sometimes programs. Maybe that makes a difference.

I buy a cup of Cofee in store and drive to one of the many Parks in Canada and sip it by a stream and river. Refreshing except mosquitos and ticks. This part of Canada is beautiful in Summer.

I never made it as far as Manitoba, but the parts I've seen are uniformly beautiful. WInters are harsh, I know, but perhaps it's worth it for the rewards of living in one of the most gorgeous environs on the planet.

I once drove my 1985 Mercedes 300D to chase fying geese all across Eastern Canada and look at beatiful feast of colurs of Maple trees-- Red, Yellow, Blue and Green- Puctuated by Canada geese, drone of Diesel Engine and Truck stop Cofee. I was trying to recreate-- Zen and the art of Motorcycle Maintenenace- Prisig I guess. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_M._Pirsig[^] But That is another form of relaxation.

5-a-side footie (soccer for the wrong-thinkers among us - I mean how can American football be football - they hold the ball in their hands 95% of the time). Spend an hour running around getting sweaty, shouting at other people and trying to inflict grievous harm on them. What could be better :-)

watching movie's, taking the dog for a walk, drawing on the pc in either illustrator or sketchup (I know strange but it relaxes me what can I say), playing a game on the pc (not to long get's boring after a while), or going out (sometimes coding for fun, but hasn't happened latly)
