I'm expecting big IT redundancies to be announced at my FTSE company this week (there is talk of budget cuts running into millions). Yet conversely there still seems to be a lot of money for projects that really sound like bubble 2.5 (in small start-ups). Are we about to hit choppy waters or will a bubble 2.5 maintain enough jobs to balance the real world cuts?

We're starting to see contracts that we bid for being put on the back burner. There seems to be a real case of belt-tightening going on as projects are being put on hold.

Deja View - the feeling that you've seen this post before.

I was made redundant in June, expecting it since just before Christmas though (as my old company like to give you something to think about over christmas, just in case you don't have anything else to do). regards,

I'm a contractor and I've been sitting at home for a month now. I know it's normally quiet in the summer but even so it's a little worrying in that I usually would have expected my CV to be forwarded for a few jobs at least. But this hasn't happened.

Hopefully you've built up a reasonable buffer. When I was a contractor (could have used future tense there, I think!) I used to laugh that 'of course I had a three month buffer', when usually three weeks between gigs would have been a problem!

Have you picked up another position since June?

Well, I won't go bankrupt in the next month. OTOH, I'm not as flush with cash as I was a year ago because of new house and new mortgage. :(

Managed to find one before I left my old company, so far so good. :)

But as a contractor downtime (or holidays as we permies call them) is always wasted time!

Well they came to pass today, office closing, jobs transferred to the south - laughable relocation, reasonable redundancy payment if we do a good handover in the next 8 months. Ah well.
