Yep, plus the always-fun-for-a-laugh Alpe D'Huez, Hautecamp, Tourmelet, and the Col du Whimper.

Enjoy, I'm just back home from there. The weather is really good (28 °C) and almost no wind (except on the top of course). Almost all the tourists also just left the country, so it's all yours!

It's that time of the year. Tomorrow my bike and I are escaping to the tallest, twistiest, most painful vomit inducing mountains my sadistic mate in Australia can line up for us for 3 weeks of cycling in France. I will be out of contact for this time apart from phone, blackberry, laptop, email, and walkie-talkies. But apart from that I'll be completely isolated. I've got a ton of email backlogged I'm trying to get through and also a bunch of TODOs that I will try and get organised into something Elina, Dmitry, Thiru, Olga and Gennady can work through if they have a chance. Please don't break anything.

      cheers, Chris Maunder

That means all we need to dodge are the Germans in their vans and the insane Italians in their Alfa's. We've got no chance of dodging the French drivers but they are so nice anyway so it doesn't matter. Woohoo!

What kind of gearing do you guys use for Alpe D'Huez, or Tourmelet (I can't picture the others, so I'll just assume they are similar in difficulty)? Have a great trip and have fun!

In deference to my knees I have a compact crank and a 12-27. I'll be sitting in the 25 for the first part of the ascent on the Alpe then see how we go from there. I know - pretty soft but my aim is to crack the hour mark for the ascent which I reckon I've got about zero chance of doing ;)

We might be able to bend the map a little. I'll discuss it with my co-consipirator. Actually we're doing: Riems = a little champagne action (plus seeing some old WW1 site where the Aussies fought) Tours = a little Chateux action Bordeaux = a lot of wine action It's all about preparation ;) Rest? I'm going to need a holiday after this!

Don't feel bad! You're going to go up the full 21 switchbacks, right? Most people couldn't even make up 1 or 2 of them, much less 21!

21 and all the way up to the heliport. Last year we did the Stelvio (48 switchbacks) and the Tre Cime (18% bits, plus the last 5km at 15%). I'm actually looking forward to some rides under 12% for once!

Yep, plus the always-fun-for-a-laugh Alpe D'Huez, Hautecamp, Tourmelet, and the Col du Whimper.

                                        cheers, Chris Maunder

In the end the effect is the same.
