in front of several people, a medium group setting... one of the administrative assistants approached me and said "can i ask you a question?" being dumb as i am, i said "sure" and she said "are you single?" to which i said "why? i am considering getting a cat" and she replied "i just think Laura is cute. i am just saying" (Laura is my admin assistant) i said "well maybe you should date her" and for some reason people thought my response was innapropriate. :|

Excellent... Dang girls/women are so nosy!!! Or, if this Laura is single, it could be a way of finding out where you're standing... :-?

And people are losing their sense of humour or may be never had one... :-\ One answer could be: "There is no place for my personal life at work!" This only if you don't want to swim there...as somebody else mentioned... Have a good one!

I believe being asked this question means either Laura is interested in jgasm or the girls at work discussed it and they believe Laura and jgasm would make a good couple.

Argh! These non-geek people with their "relationships" and "socializing" and "friendships". They should really get a life and spend more time with their computers.

LOL, good one. Maybe next time you can try piss off the female half of the office in one comment. "Sorry, I only date 8's and above and the best I've seen in this company is a 3." (out of 10)

I try to keep the statement, "I don't think that's an appropriate topic of conversation for the workplace." handy, but for different reasons. Female co-worker: "Could you take care of a little problem I have?" Me: (see above) Female co-worker: "I have something I want you to look at." Me: (see above) Female co-worker: "How big a hard drive do I need?" Me: (see above) Female co-worker: "I was told to see you about getting more RAM." Me: (see above) etc.

well... if the person had been talking one on one with me I would probably be that candid... I think because of the group setting the question was as inappropriate as the response, which means they break even in the scheme of things since a double negative is a positive. :) So I wouldn't worry too much about it. If someone challenges you over the response explain that it was as equally inappropriate as the question, which means it was no worse than the question. because of the group setting, I would have probably said more to the extent as others did about not dating from work, and maybe remind her of one of the reason that she just clarified: people talk. I might have commented that this person was cute, and made a joke that she could do better than me, and changed the subject. And continue changing the subject until they get the picture. But then that is just me. :) I have seen several times dating at work worked, but most of the time it makes it very difficult on the couple. Once was a secret, of which I ended up finding out about, and then having to carry until it was well known. That was difficult too.

You work in a male dominated industry yet apparently have an office full of women, some of whom we are led to believe are cute. What's more, they are happy to talk to you. I've got one thing to say. Quit your bitching.

actually and to keep matters in perspective. we are led to believe that at least one is considered cute by her female peers. having never been cute, nor having more than a few women here (who are all cute), but I have no idea their perspectives of each other.... therefore there is no common ground from which to verify that this new reference does make her cute.... however, given the male dominated and asocial nature of our collective industry.... There is the strong possibility of bias on my side finding all woman cute. Therefore we have learned nothing about the cuteness of the individual without asking....

I guess we should have figured that out otherwise you would not have been bothered by the question.

Well I will add psychology of dating 101: In order to date someone you like, you need to date someone. If you are dateless, the first question raised about you is "why isn't he seeing anyone?" If you are not dateless, regardless (within reason) of the quality of the beau, it proves you are dateable and must, therefore (regardless of fact), have something going for you Then again I haven't dated in 7 years, so I'm a tad rusty :D

                                      I'm largely language agnostic

After a while they all bug me

this is justified by my chosen field. they assume i am too shy. or spend too much time on wow. which i do not play. 8-)

I would add that with dating that confidence plays a huge part. When I had no confidence in myself women detected this and stayed as far away from me as they could even women that I was not attracted to. Once I gained confidence (by dating women) women (even good looking ones) show a lot more interest in me. To be honest, cutting my hair and getting braces played a part too but I believe the confidence had the most effect since that came first.
