i was just getting ready to buy vs.net academic, wen i read the description, and it says: ----- Visual Studio .NET Professional Academic is available to educational establishments or eligible institutions. To qualify for this product, we do need proof that you are ordering on behalf of an educational establishment, or eligible institution. This proof must be in the form of an official purchase order. Individuals (students and tutors) do NOT qualify for Academic Editions or Academic Licensing, only the educational establishments where they are studying. ------- so where the hell am i suposed to get it?

Microsoft did tell me that they have no plans releasing XP on a student license, so perhaps they are giving up due to people abusing the system (I doubt they actually check your institution details).
