I am using Windows Search less and less.... In XP I stopped using it when the search companion cames in, just made everything worst.. In Vista, while I appreciate the quick name based search in the start menu and windows explorer, anything more advanced (which can be accessed trhourgh some lengthy manipulation of this and that) I just don't use them, too well hidden.. Anyway a colleague of mine is apparently usng them a lot, and curses a lot as well. I"m going back to XP, I'm going to buy a Mac, etc... Now I was wondering, what does people think of the new Windows Search? Microsoft is obviously proud of it. But what about the customers? Me, I just don't use it, except for named based search. It was easy in pre-search companion days to do a search based on file size or content for exemple but nowadays, I don't know, it's just so much less intuitive and straightforward.. what do you think?

A train station is where the train stops. A bus station is where the bus stops. On my desk, I have a work station.... _________________________________________________________ My programs never have bugs, they just develop random features.

You can turn off the animated companion in XP. I did that and search was far more bearable. Search is one instance where I actually like Vista better.

      Cheers, Vıkram.

If I wanted better search, I would install one of those Desktop search programs. Your friend wants to buy a Mac, because he didn't like Windows search? Good move.

Lengthy manipulation? I'd be shocked if you didn't know what the F3 key does. :omg:

Named based search? what's one of those?

I think he means searching only by name, as opposed to searching by other attributes (date modified, size, etc). If you've never wanted to find that document that you saved from your mailbox last night but don't remember what it was called, fine. ;P

See, exatly what I'm talking about, how would I know? OK, now I know and that's cool! But think of the poor end user!

For exemple to find all file named "*.cs" it's easy, just type in the search box .cs, other than that, you have to know black magic, such as the "F3" incantation! ;P

The Windows Desktop Search came with Outlook 2007 ... I was unable to use my computer anymore with these two shitty programs. But we're forced to use Outlook because we're gold partner now (wtf?) - I want my Thunderbird back! Anyway ... I removed the Desktop Search from my work computer (mac at home :) ) and finding some text in Outlook now takes ages.

Vista search is pants. It's not intuitive and hardly finds the files I'm after. If I search by name, quite often is says zero results. I find using dos dir name /s/b is quicker and always finds the file. If I search inside a file for text, vista search is slow and quite often doesn't find the file I'm after, for searching inside files I use devstudio. Search in Vista is a backwards move. At least in XP search by name and search inside files were handled differently. In vista they're handled the same, and badly.
