When it comes to software licensing, I am totaly clueless. Do you have a suggestion, as to what licensing solution I should look at? Here is what im looking for: - 30 day trail maker - Ability to buy licenses online - After trial is expired, a license can be obtained online - automated license management (human intervention not required) - Ability to buy the product online, with a license I dont know where to start, what to look for? Please help me out.

take a look at Armadillo (http://www.siliconrealms.com/armadillo.htm[^]). it's a nice EXE wrapper. they have deals with a lot of the major on-line shareware vendors for license generation (so the shareware seller/credit card processor can issue the keys). it does timed expiration, run count expiration, multiple license levels, and a whole lot more. i think armadillo plus a good shareware vendor (like www.regsoft.com) will take care of all the things you're describing. -c

I don't like timed shareware because imho it may not give users enough time to really try the product. I prefer to limit the functionality of my unregistered shareware[^]. The registration key unlocks the product. I use a proprietary registration scheme that includes a customer database, automated mailings, etc. I use NorthStar Solutions[^] as my sales agent. /ravi Let's put "civil" back in "civilization" http://www.ravib.com ravib@ravib.com

first, i'm not affiliated with Armadillo, so i'm not trying to sell it... but, a quick scan of the cracks shows that they're all for older versions. the latest version is supposed to address some of the problems with older versions (as are all new versions of anything, i suppose). also, you can integrate your app into the armadillo run time stuff such that even if you unpack the EXE, it won't run unless you also find and patch all the places where the EXE is hooked into armadillo. that's quite a bit more work than just running a simple unpacker. -c

Cool - more power to them. I didn't check to see what was the last cracked version was. Regards, Larry Antram Stardust Software "Those who choose to sacrifice freedom in order to gain security shall not have, nor do they deserve, either one" -- Benjamin Franklin

Although I might add it does look like Armadillo 2.51 is cracked: demaradillo v0.4 - Full decryptor for Armadillo v2.51 (Final Build, Trial Version) That's not the newest version, but according to the Armadillo revision history it was released only about 5 months ago (Version 2.51, 28Feb2002 Build 1125). I'm not trying to pick on Armadillo - they very well may be the best around - I have no idea - all the other ones have the same problems. Just pointing out that the lifespan of any particular version of this type of product can be fairly short. Depends if someone is motivated enough to crack it or not. Hmmm. I did a pretty ammount of research on this topic for my software Crivo. I can only say for my experience alone: Crivo is an enterprise class software, with price ranging some hundred thousand dollars. As you may expect, we sell only a few licenses each year. The user has an option to rent it in a “pay per use” way, paying for each credit assessment Crivo makes. Its use on companies changes the way they work, so we have to visit them, demonstrate it and prove it works and reduces costs, more than Crivo’s price. More than that, work with them implementing credit assessment policies. So, physical shipment of hardware is not an issue here. Nor a hardlock key price does. We have used Aladdin’s HASP-Time4 (here in Brazil it costs about US$ 50 each) for creating an in-house licensing system that features: .30 day trial (actually, we can give any time amount) .“Pay per use” mode. .“Buy a definite license” mode .Automatic key updating via a web service So, the human process is almost eliminated and the use is pretty simple. The only hassle we have is the management of key shipments and key stock. The whole system took a week to create. The lesson here is that to answer your question, you have to answer first: What is my software? A shareware? A try-and-buy? How my competitors work? Who are my customers? Do I have physical contact with them? Are they always connected to the Internet (e.g., if your software is a Getright-like, you can assume yes)? How(modem, broadband, private lines)? What’s my price? Can I afford a hardlock solution? Will my future customers find my licensing system a hassle? What’s the volume of sales expected? Is the system flexible enough to be implemented with another security vendor? E.g., suppose someone hacks HASP-Time4. Do I have another vendor with a similar solution? Concussus surgo. When struck I rise.

Look at winzip, it took it's time but it was eventually bought out. I recommend NagWare... Let em use it but put a nag everytime it starts. Normski. - the next bit of code is self modifying ... jmp 0xCODE
Norm Almond wrote: Let em use it but put a nag everytime it starts. I think that's a horrible idea. Nagging the user every launch during the trial period is just silly. I want to evaluate the software, not click "yes I know I'm in the trial period you sodding program" every single time. WinZip is a horrible transgressor in this area. If you have an X day trial, I personally believe in no nags at all until X days have elapsed. --Mike-- Just released - RightClick-Encrypt v1.3 - Adds fast & easy file encryption to Explorer My really out-of-date homepage Sonork-100.19012 Acid_Helm

I'm in the process of finalising a product that addresses all these issues for you and includes a Customer Relationship Management system and copy protection. If you're not in a hurry and you're happy to look at a new product, just send me some email and I'll keep you informed of progress. At this stage, the first version will be available in the next couple of months. The price will be low and the copy protection will not be easily cracked like other systems such as Armadillo. I don't want to do a sales pitch on CodeProject, so I'm not going to tell you the website or the product name. Just contact me directly for more info. Russell Robinson (russellr@rootsoftware.com)
