Network storage device

A few months back someone recommended a network storage device, that allowed hot plugging of hard drives and automatically handled the raid mirroring based on what ever configuration of drives you stuck in. Oh, it was also a rather cool looking shiny black cube with flashing lights on the front to indicate capacity. Can anyone remember it, or recommend something else. I need a standalone nas, ideally nice and expandable and does mirroring. Must be usable from both windows and Linux. I'd like to utilise some of my existing drives, so several drive bays or the ability to be combined with multiple units is needed. I've read reviews that heavily criticise a lot of the popular models. Ta

That is exactly the one I was thinking of. Cheers. Doesn't have a network connection though, bit annoying, but they seem to supply an optional extra to support that. Thanks

Sounds like the drobo to me. Nice device but expensive, you have to pay an extra $200 to get the ethernet module (it is normally USB.) The DNS-323 by D-Link is cheaper and for techies like us a good choice. Doesn't do hot-swapping though AFAIK.

+1 for the D-Link DNS-323. I've had one for 12-18 months and it hasn't missed a step.

Ditto, the nice thing about the D-Link unit is you purchase the HDs yourself, so you determine the capacity. I picked up a few 500GB HDs on sale last year for ~$100 each.
