Just dropped by to see the latest xkcd[^] - I'd never heard the airplane/treadmill argument before. Added to Rickrolling and 2 girls 1 cup in the list of things that xkcd has taught me

Half of the joke with xkcd is the image alternate text. (hover or view properties) IMHO, if you put a plane on a sheet of ice it will still take of an fly. A real simple test would be to build a model plane and actually test the entire theory which I think would be easy. And if we wanted to know the answer as quickly and cheaply as possible, I bet Austin Meyer could tell us in less than an hour.

MythBusters tested the airplane-on-treadmill theory actually. The plane did take off but I'm still skeptical.

Mythbusters did it already. The plane took off with ease every time.

Yes, I saw in my Google search, however, it seemed slightly off-topic since they are pseudo science. There would just be something awesomely wicked about seeing a 10 mile treadmill in a flight-sim with a 747 rolling on it ... you know after reevaluation, I plane might not be able to take off because it would hit the handle bars ...

Or treadmill. That's not even very thought-provoking; of course it can take off. Only airspeed matters.
